Sourcing rack servers from China

Rack servers and the listed storage units from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected lines, with no listed trade remedies. For regulated servers, ecodesign compliance needs a declaration supported by technical documentation. Fix the component list and test the delivered configuration. UK duty on rack servers and storage units

Heading 8471 covers automatic data-processing machines and their units. Rack servers presented as processing units are candidates for 8471 50 00 00; equipment presented as a complete system needs a separate classification check. Separately supplied drives and storage units should be classified according to their own descriptions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 October 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT still applies, normally at 20%. See import duty and VAT.

Confirm the configuration and how the goods are presented using finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see laptops, mini PCs and computer peripherals.

Specify the server configuration and rack fit

Agree processor and motherboard part numbers, memory type and population, drive models and condition, storage controller, network interfaces and power supplies. Record chassis height and depth, rail compatibility, cable clearance and airflow direction. State whether components must be new, and require written approval before substitutions.

Specify firmware versions, remote-management functions, operating-system licensing and access to updates. Agree workload tests, temperature logging and power-supply failover checks where redundant supplies are fitted. Ask for energy test data for the supplied configuration. Regulated products need an ecodesign declaration of conformity supported by technical documentation.

For sale in Great Britain, obtain English instructions and check that the product or packaging identifies the importer with a contactable address under the hazardous-substances rules. If importing commercially for resale, arrange annual electrical-equipment producer registration. Include these documents in the testing and certification review.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of rack servers for a small business under 8471 50 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,000, so it is £2,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Components: compare physical labels and firmware inventory with the approved parts list; check drive health and evidence of previous use.

Rack fit: trial the supplied rails, check chassis depth and cable clearance, and examine ears, handles and connectors for transport damage.

Operation: boot the agreed software, test memory, storage and network ports, and log temperatures under the agreed workload.

Handover: verify serial numbers, firmware versions, English instructions and the remote-management credential handover. Repeat the agreed acceptance checks on arrival; record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A matching chassis can hide a different motherboard, slower memory, worn drives or a substituted storage controller. Those changes can affect performance, driver compatibility and the relevance of test documents. Compare the inspected build with the configuration named in the documents before approving shipment.

Missing rails, incompatible power leads and inaccessible management accounts can delay installation even when the server boots. Agree the accessory list, firmware access and fault-replacement process before ordering. Keep photographs, serial-number records and test logs for the delivered batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rack servers from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty on the selected server and storage lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties. Import VAT normally applies at 20%.

Which commodity code should I use for a rack server?

8471 50 00 00 is a candidate for a separately presented processing unit. A complete system or separately supplied storage device needs its own classification check.

What ecodesign paperwork should I ask the factory for?

For a regulated server, obtain a declaration of conformity supported by technical documentation. Ask for energy test data matching the configuration you are buying.

How do I check whether the server contains used parts?

Specify component condition in writing. Compare labels, serial numbers, firmware inventory and drive-health records with the approved specification, then investigate discrepancies before acceptance.
