Duty and waste controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 2809 covers diphosphorus pentaoxide, phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids, whether or not chemically defined. Pyrophosphoric acid is covered here through the phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids line, 2809 20 00 00. The supplied tariff data contains only this relevant commodity line.

The China duty is 0%, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. For a Chinese shipment classed as waste under notification controls, shipment to England must await consent from the destination, dispatch and transit authorities. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste requirements before shipping or arranging a return.

Confirm the composition and intended use through finding your commodity code. See the polyphosphoric acid guide for the wider product family.

Specify pyrophosphoric acid content

Name pyrophosphoric acid, also called diphosphoric acid, in the purchase specification. Agree its content, the permitted orthophosphoric acid and other condensed acid content, water content, and the analytical method. A total acidity result alone should not be your acceptance test for the named acid. Specify iron, chloride, sulphate and insoluble matter limits appropriate to your process.

Check your UK REACH registration position before ordering; registration is per substance and per legal entity. Chemicals placed on the Great Britain market must be classified and labelled under GB CLP. UK REACH requires safety data sheets. Obtain a sheet matching the actual composition, alongside the batch certificate of analysis, and agree container compatibility and storage instructions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pallet consignment of sealed containers for a specialist chemical distributor under 2809 20 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,000, so it is £3,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the purchase specification, container label and batch certificate; obtain analysis that distinguishes pyrophosphoric acid from the other acids present.

Composition: check the agreed acid profile, water content and impurities using the contracted methods; retain a sealed batch sample.

Packing: inspect compatible containers, closure seals, leaks, external contamination and batch markings before accepting delivery.

Documents: match the safety data sheet and hazard label to the supplied composition, and reconcile container quantities with the packing list.

What goes wrong

A supplier can offer a general polyphosphoric acid mixture when the buyer needs a defined pyrophosphoric acid content. A certificate showing only total acidity leaves that difference unresolved. Agree the composition test before placing the order, and arrange independent analysis through testing and certification.

Moisture ingress can change the acid profile during storage. Poor closure seals, unsuitable containers and certificates copied from a different batch also undermine acceptance. Compare arrival samples with the agreed specification before releasing the material for use.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on pyrophosphoric acid from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot gives 0% under 2809 20 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Is pyrophosphoric acid the same specification as polyphosphoric acid?

Do not accept the names as interchangeable specifications. State the required pyrophosphoric acid content and permitted other acids, then agree an analysis that measures that profile.

What chemical paperwork should I ask the supplier for?

Ask for the batch certificate of analysis, a safety data sheet matching the composition and the proposed hazard label. Separately check your UK REACH registration position.

Does the tariff waste control apply to my acid shipment?

The tariff attaches waste controls. Ask your broker to confirm whether the consignment falls within them. Waste moving under notification controls to England needs the relevant authorities' consent before shipment.
