Sourcing power inductors from China

Power inductors from China carry 0% UK duty under 8504 50 00 00; the selected core and parts lines also carry 0%. Confirm conformity requirements for the component and its finished assembly rather than assuming each needs a separate mark. Specify saturation and thermal performance. UK duty on power inductors and their parts

Heading 8504 covers electrical transformers, static converters and inductors. Power inductors fall within other inductors, while separately imported ferrite cores, steel cores and other inductor parts have their own lines. The parts rows below cover components for transformers as well as inductors.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 9 October 2026, the selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT at 20% still applies.

Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, construction and whether the shipment contains complete inductors or parts. See power supplies, transformers and inverters for the wider heading.

Specify inductance under operating current

State inductance and tolerance, the measurement frequency, winding resistance, saturation current and allowable temperature rise. Ask how the factory defines saturation current and thermal current: ratings cannot be compared reliably without the test conditions. Give the operating current waveform, switching frequency, ambient conditions and available cooling.

Fix the core material, winding construction, shielding, package dimensions, terminal layout and soldering profile. For coupled inductors, include winding connections and insulation expectations. Approve a drawing and a sample tested in the intended circuit.

For conformity marking, official guidance says a single marking covering the overall product is sufficient for many products. Ask a testing specialist to confirm the position for the supplied component and finished assembly; avoid treating a generic CE document as evidence of the inductor's electrical performance.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 power inductors under 8504 50 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,800, so it is £2,560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Electrical values: measure inductance and winding resistance using the agreed conditions, and compare the batch with the approved sample.

Current and heat: check inductance under bias and temperature rise in the intended circuit, including the operating extremes in your specification.

Construction: inspect core cracks, winding damage, terminal alignment and solderability; compare dimensions and materials with the approved drawing.

Arrival and traceability: check reel or tray protection, moisture damage, part identification and batch records before releasing stock. Use quality inspection to agree the checks before shipment.

What goes wrong

An inductor can match its nominal inductance at low test current yet lose inductance in service. Comparing only the headline current rating can hide different saturation definitions or thermal test conditions. Approve the measurement method alongside the acceptance limits.

Substituted core material, thinner wire or a changed winding can alter losses, resistance and temperature rise while the package still looks correct. Require approval for material changes and compare production samples with the retained sample.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on power inductors from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for 8504 50 00 00 and the selected core and parts lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT at 20% still applies.

What commodity code covers power inductors?

8504 50 00 00 covers other inductors. Separately imported cores and parts have different lines; confirm the construction and shipment contents before declaring the code.

Does every power inductor need a separate CE mark?

Official guidance says a single marking covering the overall product is sufficient for many products. Have a specialist confirm the applicable position for your component and finished assembly.

How do I check a factory's saturation current rating?

Ask for the test conditions and the inductance reduction used to define saturation. Compare inductance under bias and temperature rise with your approved sample in the intended circuit.
