Sourcing PP split-film tape yarn from China

Polypropylene split-film tape yarn from China carries 0% UK duty under 5404 90 10 00, with no anti-dumping duty in the supplied tariff data. The strip provision covers an apparent width not exceeding 5 mm; check the supplied construction and width before declaring it. Cambridge China Bridge sources polypropylene split-film tape yarn.

Zero duty for qualifying polypropylene strip

Heading 5404 covers synthetic monofilament and synthetic strip. For polypropylene split-film tape yarn, the relevant strip provision covers an apparent width not exceeding 5 mm. Check the material as supplied, including its splitting or fibrillation, rather than relying on a supplier's description of it as yarn. See the wider heading guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 November 2026, the supplied data records 0% duty for Chinese goods under 5404 90 10 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. The table shows buying variants under this same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Ask for the polymer composition, construction description, apparent width and representative samples before confirming the commodity code. A polypropylene monofilament is a different construction from split-film tape yarn. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the tape and its processing behaviour

Specify polypropylene composition, virgin or recycled feedstock, apparent width and tolerance, linear density, breaking force, elongation and the required degree of fibrillation. Describe whether you need a flat tape or an opened network of connected strands. Agree colour, surface finish and any outdoor exposure performance against an approved sample.

Set bobbin core dimensions, winding direction, package shape, net yarn weight and acceptable joins. Trial the sample on your weaving or twisting equipment and retain it as the production reference. Ask the supplier to identify colourants and additives for a chemical review: REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances in articles.

For textile sales in Great Britain, official guidance requires fibre content on the label. Agree the fibre description and check it against the actual material, alongside your purchasing information for colour, batch and net weight.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 12 tonnes of polypropylene split-film tape yarn on bobbins, illustrative only under 5404 90 10 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £25,200, so it is £5,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Tape geometry: measure apparent width and linear density across sampled bobbins; inspect uneven splitting, excessive loose strands and damaged edges.

Strength and processing: check breaking force and elongation against the agreed method, then run sampled bobbins on your equipment for breaks, snagging and uneven feed.

Winding and quantity: check net yarn weight, core fit, package stability, joins and unwinding tension; inspect crushed cores and loose winding on arrival.

Colour and identification: compare with the retained sample and check fibre information and batch identity. Use the quality inspection guide to record findings.

What goes wrong

Uneven slitting or drawing leaves tape with variable width and strength. Excessive fibrillation creates loose strands that catch on guides, while insufficient splitting changes the intended texture and processing behaviour. A change in feedstock or additives can alter colour, stiffness and breakage even when the stated linear density stays the same.

A sample can run well while the delivered bobbins unwind badly because winding tension, core fit or package shape has changed. Compare the delivery with the retained sample and record the affected batches before mixing stock. Treat outdoor durability as a performance specification to verify, rather than accepting an additive claim alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polypropylene split-film tape yarn from China?

The supplied tariff data records 0% under 5404 90 10 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Is polypropylene tape yarn the same as polypropylene monofilament?

No. Tape yarn is made from film slit into strips, sometimes fibrillated into connected strands. Monofilament is a single filament. Confirm construction and apparent width before choosing the code.

What should I specify for split-film tape yarn?

Specify composition, apparent width, linear density, fibrillation, breaking force, elongation, colour and bobbin format. Agree test methods and retain a sample that runs on your equipment.

How do I check whether the bobbins will run properly?

Trial sampled bobbins on your equipment. Check core fit, unwinding tension, joins, loose strands and breakage, then compare the delivery with the approved sample.
