Sourcing polyester chiffon fabric from China
Polyester chiffon fabric from China carries a flat 8% UK duty across the relevant heading 5407 lines. Confirm filament type and colour treatment before selecting the code. Fabric sold to consumers needs fibre labelling; confirm applicable UK REACH dye restrictions with HSE. Cambridge China Bridge sources polyester chiffon fabric.

Polyester chiffon duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 5407 covers woven fabrics of synthetic filament yarn. For polyester chiffon, distinguish textured from non-textured filaments and identify whether the fabric is unbleached, bleached, dyed, yarn-dyed or printed. The selected polyester lines all carry 8% duty for goods from China.
The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. The heading's suspension for a specifically described technical fabric under 5407 10 00 00 does not cover ordinary polyester chiffon.
Ask the mill for fibre composition by weight, filament type and fabric construction, then confirm the commodity code. The name chiffon alone does not settle classification. For another polyester fabric within the wider heading, see the polyester organza guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| At least 85% non-textured polyester filaments, unbleached or bleached | 5407 61 10 00 | 8% | None |
| At least 85% non-textured polyester filaments, dyed | 5407 61 30 00 | 8% | None |
| At least 85% non-textured polyester filaments, different-coloured yarns | 5407 61 50 00 | 8% | None |
| At least 85% non-textured polyester filaments, printed | 5407 61 90 00 | 8% | None |
| At least 85% textured polyester filaments, dyed | 5407 52 00 00 | 8% | None |
| At least 85% textured polyester filaments, printed | 5407 54 00 00 | 8% | None |
Specify chiffon drape, sheerness and yarn
Specify fibre composition, textured or non-textured yarn, yarn size and twist, weave, usable width, weight per square metre and finish. Approve a physical sample for drape, surface texture and sheerness. Compare it over the intended lining and sew a trial panel using the planned seam construction.
Set shade against an approved lab dip and agree checks for washing, rubbing, dimensional change and seam slippage. For printed chiffon, approve motif size, repeat and registration. Confirm with HSE which UK REACH azo dye restrictions apply to textiles that come into direct and prolonged contact with skin; ask for colour-specific test evidence.
Fabric sold to consumers by the metre needs fibre-content labelling. Agree the label wording and keep the composition evidence with the order records.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 3,000 metres of dyed polyester chiffon fabric; illustrative order, not a quotation under 5407 61 30 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,600. Duty at 8% is £768. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,368, so it is £2,073.60. Import taxes total £2,841.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £768 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Handle and appearance: compare drape, sheerness, surface texture and shade with the approved sample under consistent lighting.
Construction: measure usable width, weight and roll length; inspect for snags, holes, missing yarns, creases and distorted prints.
Sewing and washing: sew trial seams, check yarn movement and puckering, and compare colour transfer and dimensional change with the agreed specification.
Roll identity: match dye lots and roll labels to the packing list, compare shade along and between rolls, and check for damp packaging. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspection.

What goes wrong
A chiffon sample can feel right while the bulk fabric has a different weight, twist or finish, changing its drape and transparency. Shade differences become conspicuous when panels overlap or sit over a pale lining. Loose construction can open at seams, while handling can leave snags in the sheer surface.
Keep the approved sample and lab dip available for bulk comparison. Separate shade groups before cutting and check sewing performance before releasing rolls to production. A composition label or generic dye report does not establish that the delivered colour and lot match the order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on polyester chiffon from China?
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the relevant polyester filament woven-fabric lines carry 8% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown.
Which commodity code applies to polyester chiffon?
It depends on fibre composition, textured or non-textured filaments and colour treatment. Dyed fabric with at least 85% non-textured polyester filaments is listed under 5407 61 30 00.
Does polyester chiffon sold by the metre need a fibre label?
Fabric sold to consumers by the metre needs fibre-content labelling. Check that the stated composition matches the supplied fabric.
What should I test before ordering bulk chiffon?
Compare drape and sheerness over the intended lining, sew trial seams, and check shade, rubbing and washing performance. Agree width, weight and dimensional-change acceptance criteria.
