Sourcing plate heat exchangers from China
The selected plate heat exchanger and parts lines carry 0% UK duty for goods from China. For pressure equipment, the conformity assessment procedure depends on its classification. Agree the fluids, thermal duty and pressure limits before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources plate heat exchangers.

UK duty on plate heat exchangers
Heading 8419 covers heat-exchange units within its wider temperature-treatment machinery scope. Ordinary gasketed, brazed and welded plate heat exchangers are candidates for 8419 50 80 90. The table repeats that line to distinguish constructions; these are not separate tariff subdivisions. Replacement parts need their own classification.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. This tariff position does not establish product conformity.
Confirm the commodity code against the actual construction, function and imported configuration. Do not automatically classify loose gaskets as machinery parts. For the wider equipment category, see machinery and industrial equipment.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gasketed plate heat exchangers, other heat-exchange units | 8419 50 80 90 | 0% | None |
| Other machinery parts, where applicable to heat-exchanger parts | 8419 90 85 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the fluids and thermal duty
State the fluids on each side, inlet and required outlet temperatures, flow rates, heat transfer duty and allowable pressure drop. Include working and maximum allowable pressures, temperature limits and cleaning chemicals. Ask for a selection calculation against these conditions, rather than accepting a catalogue capacity. For cooling-tower purchases, see our industrial cooling tower sourcing guide.
Choose gasketed construction where access for cleaning and plate replacement matters. For brazed or welded units, agree the cleaning method and replacement strategy. Specify plate material, gasket compound or brazing material, connection details, mounting arrangement and spare-part identification.
For pressure equipment, HSE states that the appropriate conformity assessment procedure depends on classification. Ask the supplier to explain the classification and proposed assessment route before ordering. Confirm instruction and safety-information language requirements with the relevant authority and request English versions. For food duties, confirm applicable food-contact requirements with the relevant authority and request supporting evidence for food-contact surfaces, including gaskets and seals.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial purchase of a compact brazed plate heat exchanger under 8419 50 80 90, invoiced at £240 free on board, with £235 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £475. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £475, so it is £95. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the delivered model, connections, flow-direction markings and material records to the approved specification.
Integrity: inspect plates, frame, connections and packing for distortion or damage; review pressure and leak-test records tied to the supplied unit.
Performance: compare the factory test conditions with the agreed fluids, temperatures, flow rates and pressure drop; identify any substituted test conditions.
Cleaning and spares: check access, gasket seating, cleaning instructions and spare-part references. Include these checks in the inspection plan.

What goes wrong
A quoted heat transfer capacity can conceal different inlet temperatures, fluid properties or flow rates. The exchanger may then miss the required outlet temperature or impose excessive pressure drop. Put the selection conditions and acceptance criteria into the purchase specification.
An unsuitable gasket compound or brazing material can fail in the service fluid or cleaning process. Damaged plates and poor seals can allow leakage between circuits. Require material approval before substitution and agree how faults will be investigated using the unit's identification and test records.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on plate heat exchangers from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% for 8419 50 80 90 and the selected other-parts line, with no recorded trade remedies. Confirm the code for the actual goods.
What should I specify before asking a factory for a quote?
Specify both fluids, temperatures, flow rates, heat transfer duty, pressure drop, pressure limits, materials, connections and cleaning method. Request a selection calculation.
What pressure compliance evidence should I ask for?
Ask for the equipment classification and the assessment route that follows from it, supported by documents identifying the supplied model. A generic certificate does not explain the selection.
Can I import replacement plates and gaskets under the same code?
Do not assume so. Classify each separately supplied component by its material and function; the complete exchanger's code does not automatically cover every spare.
