Duty and classification for rotational moulders

Heading 8477 covers machinery for working rubber or plastics and manufacturing products from those materials. A plastic rotational moulding machine is a candidate for the other moulding machinery line, 8477 59 80 00. The table also includes workshop granulators and machinery parts; these are separate goods, rather than alternative codes for the complete machine.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's operating description and the scope of supply. Moulds shipped separately fall under heading 8480; see plastic rotational moulding moulds. Keep machine, mould and spare-part descriptions distinct on the packing list.

Specify the mould envelope and heating process

Specify shuttle, carousel or rocking-arm operation, the mould envelope, loaded mould weight, arm configuration and mounting arrangement. Define the resin and the hollow product to be made, including wall thickness and acceptance criteria. Agree oven heating, cooling method, rotation control and the information recorded during a trial.

Confirm site electricity, fuel supply, ventilation, floor space and access for unloading before selecting the machine. The responsible person must ensure that essential health and safety requirements are satisfied. Ask for the conformity declaration, proposed CE or UKCA marking, English manuals, circuit diagrams and a safety review covering rotating arms, hot moulds and access to the oven.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Two compact plastic rotational moulding machines; illustrative order under 8477 59 80 00, invoiced at £64,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £69,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £69,000, so it is £13,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Trial parts: run your mould and resin at agreed production settings; inspect wall distribution, incomplete fusion, bubbles, distortion and release from the mould.

Arms and cooling: check loaded rotation, mounting security, clearance through the full movement and cooling coverage; compare recorded settings with the agreed trial.

Safety and documents: check guards, access interlocks, emergency stops and hot-surface protection against the agreed safety review; match the declaration and manuals to the delivered machine.

Arrival: inspect arm supports, oven panels, wiring and corrosion protection for transport damage; check loose parts against the packing list and arrange a site acceptance run.

What goes wrong

An oven that accommodates an empty mould may still struggle with the loaded mould and its mounting frame. Uneven heating, unsuitable rotation settings or uneven cooling can leave thin corners, poorly fused material or warped parts. A demonstration using the factory's easiest mould does not establish performance with your product.

Missing controller access, unclear burner settings and incomplete wiring diagrams make commissioning and repairs harder. Agree the trial record, software access, spare-part identification and responsibility for installation before shipment. Use testing and certification support to define the evidence to request.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on plastic rotational moulding machines from China?

The relevant heading 8477 machinery line carries 0% duty in the supplied tariff data. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded for the selected lines; import VAT is separate.

Are rotational moulding moulds included in the machine code?

Moulds shipped separately fall under heading 8480. Describe the complete machine, moulds and spare parts separately and confirm classification before shipment.

What should a factory trial demonstrate?

Use your resin and mould to check wall distribution, fusion, distortion, release and loaded arm movement. Record heating, rotation and cooling settings against agreed acceptance criteria.

What documents should I request before shipment?

Request the conformity declaration, English manuals, wiring diagrams, safety review, trial records and spare-part list. Check that the documents identify the machine you are buying.
