Sourcing plastic rotomoulds from China

Plastic rotational moulding moulds from China carry 0% UK duty under the other moulds for plastics line. If your mould stays in China to produce imported goods, ask your customs broker whether its cost outside the seller's price should be included in those goods' customs value. Cambridge China Bridge sources plastic rotational moulding moulds.

Duty on rotational moulding moulds

Heading 8480 covers moulds for plastics and other materials, mould bases and moulding patterns. Plastic rotational moulding moulds belong in the other moulds category rather than the injection or compression category. The table also identifies separately supplied bases and patterns used to make the tool; these are ancillary goods, not alternative codes for a complete rotational mould.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. Zero duty does not remove import VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the mould's forming process, the material it forms and whether the shipment contains a complete mould, a base or a pattern. The wider moulds and tooling guide covers the rest of the heading and customs valuation when tooling stays at the factory.

Specify the shell, vents and machine mounting

Specify cast aluminium or fabricated steel, the resin to be processed, finished-part dimensions, shrinkage allowance, surface texture and parting-line position. Agree the mould shell thickness, flange construction, clamps, vent positions and removable inserts. Identify surfaces where weld marks, repair patches or release-agent residue would be unacceptable.

Send the factory your machine mounting drawing, oven clearance and permitted tool load. Agree how the tool opens, how the finished part releases and how it will be handled while hot. Under work equipment rules, duties fall on people and companies that own, operate or control equipment. Review the proposed tool with the UK operator before manufacture.

Record ownership, exclusive use, maintenance responsibility and removal terms in the tooling agreement. If you provide a mould that remains in China to make goods you import, ask your customs broker whether its cost not already in the seller's price should be included in those goods' customs value and how to apportion it across shipments.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A complete rotational moulding tool for a plastic tank, illustrative only under 8480 79 00 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £22,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £22,000, so it is £4,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Shell and flanges: compare material records with the specification; inspect welds, casting repairs, cavity finish and flange alignment. On arrival, check for transport distortion and damage to the parting faces.

Vents and closures: check that vents are clear, inserts are secure and clamps close consistently. Inspect the parting line for gaps that could lose powder or leave excessive flash.

Machine fit: compare mounting points, external dimensions and tool mass with the buyer's machine drawing. Check access for opening, demoulding and handling before accepting the tool.

Trial parts: inspect parts made with the agreed resin and recorded process settings. Measure dimensions and wall thickness at agreed locations, and check corners, inserts, surface finish and distortion against the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A mould can match the outside drawing yet produce thin corners, pinholes or warped parts. Blocked vents, uneven shell construction and poorly positioned inserts can undermine the trial. Agree a wall-thickness inspection map and retain the approved trial part and process record so later changes can be traced.

Misaligned flanges leak powder, rough repairs mark the moulded surface, and mounting frames can clash with the machine or oven. Require evidence of fit and a moulding trial before shipment, then repeat the dimensional and condition checks on arrival. Record ownership and release terms before a dispute makes moving the tool difficult.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rotational moulding moulds from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% under 8480 79 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Which commodity code covers plastic rotational moulding moulds?

8480 79 00 00 covers other moulds for rubber or plastics. Confirm the forming process and shipment contents; separately supplied bases and patterns have their own lines.

What if the mould stays at the Chinese factory?

If you provide it to make imported goods, ask your customs broker whether any mould cost outside the seller's price should enter those goods' customs value. Agree ownership, maintenance and removal terms in writing.

How do I approve a rotational moulding mould?

Check machine fit, shell condition, flange closure and vents. Approve trial parts made with your agreed resin against dimensions, wall-thickness locations and surface-finish requirements.
