Sourcing plastic beehive frames from China
New plastic beehive frames proposed under 3926 90 97 90 carry 6% UK duty from China, rather than a variable duty range. Confirm the code and food-contact suitability; ask APHA about any beeswax coating before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources plastic beehive frames.

UK duty on plastic beehive frames
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 3926 covers other articles of plastics. The proposed residual code for these frames is 3926 90 97 90, carrying 6% duty from China with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded. The table shows product variants against the same tariff line, rather than separate classifications.
That line has suspensions limited to named products; the supplied descriptions do not identify beehive frames. The UK Trade Tariff also attaches veterinary control, an import prohibition on goods for torture and repression, and an export restriction on such goods. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to the actual frames, including any animal-origin coating.
Confirm the construction, material and coating through the commodity code guide. Do not classify a beeswax-coated frame solely from the description of an uncoated sample. For the wider hive purchase, see wooden beehives.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| New uncoated plastic brood frames, proposed classification | 3926 90 97 90 | 6% | None |
Specify hive fit, foundation and coating
Specify the hive system and supply a drawing of the frame and mating hive box. Record overall width and depth, top-bar length, lug shape, side-bar spacing and foundation attachment. Distinguish brood frames from honey frames, and integral moulded foundation from frames that accept a separate sheet.
Fix the resin grade, colour additives and permitted cleaning method. For plastic parts that touch food, confirm the applicable food-contact requirements with the relevant authority. For frames intended to contact honey, request material information and test evidence matching the finished frame and intended use, rather than accepting a generic resin certificate.
State whether the frames are uncoated or beeswax-coated. Ask APHA to confirm the import route for a coating before approving it. Official apiculture guidance says beeswax in the form of honeycomb is not permitted to be imported; do not treat actual wax honeycomb as equivalent to a moulded plastic foundation.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of new uncoated plastic beehive frames; FOB value and freight are illustrative, not a quotation under 3926 90 97 90, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,600. Duty at 6% is £636. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,236, so it is £2,247.20. Import taxes total £2,883.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £636 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: place samples in the intended hive box and check lug seating, spacing and removal without forcing.
Moulding: inspect for warping, sharp flash, incomplete cell detail and cracks around the lugs; compare flexibility with the approved sample.
Foundation: check that separate sheets stay seated, or that integral foundation is flat and consistently moulded; compare any wax coating with the agreed sample.
Arrival: inspect crushed cartons, bent frames, contamination and batch identification before releasing stock. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong
A familiar hive name can conceal a different frame size or lug profile. Fit failures can also come from warped mouldings or side bars that leave the wrong spacing. Approve samples in your actual hive box and keep a signed drawing and retained sample for production comparison.
Resin substitution can make frames brittle, while weak lugs can crack during handling. Uneven wax application creates another variable, and coating import questions can remain unresolved until dispatch. Agree material and coating changes in writing and settle the coating route before placing the order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on plastic beehive frames from China?
The proposed code 3926 90 97 90 carries 6% duty from China in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded. Confirm the code for your construction and coating.
Can I import beeswax-coated plastic frames?
Ask APHA and your broker to confirm the route for the actual coating before ordering. Apiculture guidance prohibits beeswax in the form of honeycomb; it does not specifically resolve coated plastic frames.
What should I send the factory to get the right frame size?
Send a dimensioned drawing, the hive system, a mating-box sample or fit reference, and details of the lugs, side-bar spacing and foundation attachment. Approve a physical fit sample.
Is a food-grade resin certificate enough?
Request evidence for the finished frame, including its colour additives and intended honey contact. A resin certificate alone does not show that the delivered frame matches the tested material.
