Sourcing Pickled Asparagus from China

Pickled asparagus from China carries 16% UK duty, whether or not sugar is added, with no listed trade remedy or suspension. Imported pickles must meet the same or equivalent food hygiene and compositional standards as food produced in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources pickled asparagus.

Pickled asparagus duty and import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2001 covers edible plant products prepared or preserved by vinegar or acetic acid. Pickled asparagus falls within the residual vegetable lines: 2001 90 97 91 without added sugar and 2001 90 97 99 for other recipes. Both carry 16% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension. Spears and pieces repeat these codes in the table because cut format does not create a separate listed line.

The tariff attaches Veterinary control and Import control of organic products. For ordinary plant-only pickles, official guidance says a health certificate is not normally needed; confirm the attached veterinary control and declaration requirement with your customs broker for the actual Chinese recipe. Organic consignments need a Certificate of Inspection from the relevant control body in the exporting country. For imports into Great Britain, the certificate is issued by the exporter's control body.

Confirm the preservation method, full recipe and added sugar before choosing the commodity code. This guide concerns asparagus preserved with vinegar or acetic acid. For other products within this heading, see pickles and vegetables in vinegar.

Specify asparagus grade, texture and pickle liquor

Specify green or white asparagus, whole spears or pieces, spear length and thickness, trimming, peeling, tip condition and acceptable broken pieces. Approve a sample for tenderness, fibrous bases, colour and flavour. Agree drained weight, jar size, vinegar type, acidity, salt, added sugar, spices, heat treatment, shelf life and storage instructions after opening.

Solid retail food packed in liquid must show drained net weight. Confirm net-quantity requirements and the other label particulars with the relevant food authority, including the food name, ingredients, emphasised allergens, date information, storage conditions and responsible business name and address. Check mustard, celery and sulphites in the recipe; confirm the authorisation and declaration requirements for preservatives and colours with that authority. Ask for evidence that jars, lids and sealing compounds suit acidic food.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 pallets of pickled asparagus spears in glass jars, no added sugar under 2001 90 97 91, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,500. Duty at 16% is £2,960. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,460, so it is £4,292. Import taxes total £7,252; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,960 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Asparagus: check tip damage, woody bases, peeling, broken spears, colour and tenderness against the approved sample.

Fill: drain sampled jars and weigh the asparagus against the declared drained weight; compare spear size, fill level and headspace with the specification.

Stability: check acidity and heat-treatment records against the agreed process, and inspect for gas, unexpected cloudiness, bulging lids, leaks and lost vacuum.

Labels and packing: match ingredients, allergen emphasis, weights and batch identification to the recipe and records. Check jar chips, lid damage and carton protection. See quality inspection explained.

What goes wrong

Asparagus can look acceptable through the jar but have fibrous bases, soft tips or too many short pieces when opened. Excess liquor reduces usable asparagus, while rough handling breaks tips and glass. Compare opened arrival samples with retained factory samples, including drained weight and texture.

Weak acidity or poor heat treatment can allow fermentation and bulging lids. Recipe changes can also leave mustard or other allergens off the label. Hold suspect stock apart, investigate the batch records and test results, and resolve the cause before accepting a replacement batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on pickled asparagus from China?

Both relevant lines carry 16%: 2001 90 97 91 without added sugar and 2001 90 97 99 for other recipes. No trade remedy or suspension is listed in the supplied tariff facts.

Do pickled asparagus jars need a drained weight?

Yes. Solid food packed in liquid must show drained net weight. Check the asparagus weight after draining, rather than relying on the total jar contents.

Does pickled asparagus need an import health certificate?

Official guidance says ordinary plant-only pickles do not normally need one. The tariff attaches Veterinary control, so ask your customs broker to confirm the requirement for the actual recipe.

What should I check before ordering pickled asparagus?

Approve spear size, trimming, tenderness, intact tips, drained weight and flavour. Agree acidity, heat treatment, jar seals and label artwork, then compare production samples with the approved sample.
