UK duty on photographic slide projectors

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 10 November 2026, heading 9008 covers image projectors other than cinematographic projectors, photographic enlargers and reducers, and their parts and accessories. Photographic slide projectors fall within 9008 50 00 00; relevant parts and accessories fall within 9008 90 00 00. The table separates product variants that share these codes.

Both supplied commodity lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions recorded. The tariff attaches a DCMS Export Licence control. Official guidance says there are no licensing requirements for importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain. For vintage equipment, ask your customs broker to confirm the attached control and any export paperwork needed in China.

Digital video projectors belong under heading 8528. Confirm the commodity code using the projector's actual function and the description of any separately supplied parts. See the wider cine cameras and film projectors guide. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the slides, optics and cooling

Specify the slide format, mount thickness, tray or magazine system, manual or automatic changing, focusing method, lens focal length and intended projection distance. Agree the light source, replacement lamp availability, cooling arrangement, supply voltage and included accessories. Send representative slides and mounts for sample testing, including the thickest mounts you intend to use.

For mains-powered projectors, confirm the applicable electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility rules with the relevant authority. For Great Britain, confirm requirements for CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity, a UK plug or approved adaptor, and WEEE compliance. Importers must ensure that instructions are in easily understandable English. Ask for model-matched test evidence and clear lamp-change instructions through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 photographic slide projectors; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 9008 50 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,800, so it is £560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Picture: project representative slides and check centre and corner focus, light evenness, image alignment and focus drift as the projector warms.

Slide handling: cycle the supplied tray or magazine, checking for jams, double feeding, scratched mounts and reliable return of each slide.

Cooling and electrics: check fan operation, ventilation, lamp housing protection, cable condition and the agreed plug; review the electrical test records.

Packing and contents: check lens protection, tray restraint, cushioning, accessories and English instructions against the packing list on arrival.

What goes wrong

Slide mounts can jam when their thickness differs from the factory's test samples. Poor lens alignment leaves corners soft, heat shifts focus or distorts slides, and replacement lamps or trays may not fit. Approve the sample with your own slides and agree spare-part references before ordering.

Transit can loosen optics or crack trays even when the outer carton looks intact. Repeat the picture and slide-handling checks on arrival, compare the delivered model with the approved sample, and record defects before distributing stock. Set out these checks in the quality inspection brief.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
