UK duty on overhead transparency projectors

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, overhead transparency projectors fall within heading 9008 for non-cinematographic image projectors. Complete projectors use 9008 50 00 00; parts and accessories use 9008 90 00 00, subject to confirming the goods supplied. The table separates product forms within these shared codes. Both lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension.

The tariff attaches a DCMS Export Licence entry to both lines. Official cultural-goods guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the tariff entry applies to your shipment from China, particularly for historic equipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the projector's operating principle and a description of any separately supplied parts. Digital video projectors belong to heading 8528. For the wider optical-projector family, see photographic slide projectors.

Specify the transparency stage and projection head

Specify whether the machine is a desktop or folding portable design, the usable transparency area, stage-glass material, condenser arrangement, lens and mirror configuration, focus travel and head adjustment. Agree the image size and room conditions for sample approval. State the lamp type, replacement method, cooling arrangement, fan noise expectations and how the arm is secured during transport.

For mains-powered projectors, confirm with the relevant authority the applicable electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility rules, CE or UKCA marking, declaration of conformity, UK plug or approved adaptor requirements and waste electrical equipment obligations for Great Britain. Importers must ensure that instructions are in easily understandable English. Under hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Use testing and certification support to review the model's evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 overhead transparency projectors, illustrative order only under 9008 50 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,800, so it is £560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Image: project a transparency with fine text and a grid; check centre and edge focus, illumination uniformity, colour fringes and visible dust.

Stage and head: check glass for scratches, chips and movement; operate the focus mechanism and verify that the arm and mirror retain their position.

Lamp and cooling: run the approved sample under agreed operating conditions; check fan operation, unusual smells, flicker and heat around the stage and lamp housing.

Packing and documents: check protection around the glass and projection head, the supplied plug, model identification, conformity documents and English lamp-change instructions.

What goes wrong

A clear centre image can conceal blurred edges, uneven lighting or a warped stage. Folding arms can loosen after repeated handling, while a displaced mirror changes image alignment. Compare delivered units with the approved sample using the same transparency and projection arrangement.

Lamp substitutions, obstructed airflow and cracked stage glass can undermine an otherwise acceptable sample. Record the agreed lamp and optical components, check replacement compatibility and protect the head during shipment. Set these checks out in the quality inspection brief.
