UK duty on photographic enlarger heads

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, heading 9008 covers non-cinematographic image projectors, photographic enlargers and reducers. Its parts and accessories line is 9008 90 00 00, the starting point to check for separately supplied replacement heads. Complete enlargers appear under 9008 50 00 00. See the wider photographic enlarger guide.

Both lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches a DCMS Export Licence control to both lines. Official guidance says there are no licensing requirements for importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control applies to your shipment.

The table shows product examples sharing the parts and accessories line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Give your broker the head specification, intended enlarger and details of any power supply, then confirm the commodity code before shipment.

Specify the head and its enlarger interface

Name the enlarger make and model, mounting flange, fixing positions, light opening and clearance above the negative carrier. State the largest negative format to illuminate, whether the head uses condensers or a mixing chamber, and whether the order includes filters, cooling, controls and a power supply. Approve a sample fitted to the intended enlarger.

For colour heads, specify filter controls and repeatability. For variable-contrast heads, agree test prints using your chosen paper. State lamp type, replacement availability, supply voltage, connector arrangement and timer compatibility. Check illumination across the negative area after the head has warmed up.

For mains-powered configurations, check the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility evidence, UKCA or CE marking for Great Britain, declaration of conformity, UK plug or approved adaptor, and waste electrical equipment obligations. Importers must ensure electrical equipment has instructions in easily understandable English. Where hazardous-substance restrictions apply, products must show the importer’s name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Arrange testing and certification around the supplied configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 replacement colour-filter enlarger heads, illustrative only under 9008 90 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: mount the sample on the intended enlarger and check secure fixing, alignment, negative-carrier clearance and access for lamp changes.

Light: expose test prints across the supported negative area and check evenness, colour balance, filter repeatability and light leaks.

Heat and controls: run exposure cycles after warm-up and check cooling, timer switching, connector security and any change in output.

Packing and documents: check filters and mixing chambers are secured, housings are cushioned, and the supplied model matches the declaration and instructions. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

A head can fit its mounting flange yet illuminate the negative unevenly because the mixing chamber or optical spacing is wrong. Filter settings can give inconsistent prints, cooling fans can transmit vibration, and timer switching can produce unreliable exposures. Compare production samples with the approved head on the same enlarger and paper.

Transit can loosen filters, crack diffusers or distort the housing. Specify internal restraints and cushioning, and agree which replacement lamps, fans and filter assemblies remain available. Keep the approved mounting drawing and test-print procedure with the order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on photographic enlarger heads from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% for parts and accessories under 9008 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. Confirm that the separately supplied head belongs in this line.

Will a replacement head fit my existing enlarger?

Check the mounting drawing, light opening, negative-carrier clearance and optical arrangement. Approve a sample fitted to your actual enlarger rather than accepting a supplier’s compatibility claim alone.

What compliance evidence should I request for a powered head?

For mains-powered configurations, check electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility evidence, UKCA or CE marking and a declaration of conformity. Electrical equipment must have instructions in easily understandable English.

How do I test a colour or variable-contrast enlarger head?

Use the intended enlarger, negative format and photographic paper. Compare light uniformity, repeat exposures and filter settings after warm-up, and check for light leaks and cooling vibration.
