Sourcing pellet-extrusion 3D printers from China
Plastic-pellet extrusion 3D printers from China carry 0% UK duty; heading 8485 ranges from 0% to 2%, depending on the deposited material. GB machinery safety requirements apply before sale or use. Specify the pellet feed system and prove performance with your resin. Cambridge China Bridge sources pellet-extrusion 3D printers.

Duty on plastic-pellet printers
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8485 covers machines for additive manufacturing. Machines depositing plastics or rubber under 8485 20 00 00 carry 0% duty from China; metal-deposit machines carry 2%. The table repeats the plastic-deposit line for different complete printer configurations. Pellet feeding alone does not determine classification: describe the deposited material and the complete machine.
The selected plastic-deposit and other-parts lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. Some other machine lines within the heading carry waste import and export controls. If equipment is offered as waste, the UK Trade Tariff attaches waste controls to those lines; confirm the requirement with your customs broker before ordering.
Confirm the commodity code using the machine specification and classify separately supplied parts and resin separately. The other-parts line does not automatically cover every motor, heater or controller. See fused-filament printers for the wider heading, and the duty and VAT guide for import VAT, normally 20%.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete gantry printers depositing plastic pellets | 8485 20 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other additive-manufacturing machine parts, subject to classification | 8485 90 90 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the pellet feed and screw extruder
Specify the resin grades, pellet size and shape, permitted recycled content, drying arrangements, hopper and feed system, screw and barrel materials, nozzle options, heating controls and build envelope. Agree the site electrical supply, extraction connection, software access and spare-part drawings. Ask the factory to print your part using your proposed resin and record the settings, material consumption and finished dimensions.
For Great Britain, machinery must be safe before it is placed on the market or put into service. Request the declaration of conformity for the supplied configuration, English instructions, electrical schematic and technical-file evidence. Check the UKCA or CE marking against the documents. Have the applicable safety and electrical evidence reviewed through testing and certification.
If you sell equipment covered by the waste electrical equipment rules, confirm with the relevant authority whether you are a producer and need annual registration. Check the scope for the supplied installation before selling. HSE publishes guidance on controlling plastics fume during extrusion; use it when planning the printer location and extraction arrangements.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one compact plastic-pellet extrusion printer under 8485 20 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Feed and extrusion: run the agreed resin through the hopper and screw, checking bridging, interrupted feed, melt leakage, nozzle blockage and stable bead formation. Include a stop and restart in the trial.
Printed part: compare dimensions, warping, layer bonding and surface finish with the approved sample. Use the agreed drying conditions and settings so the result can be reproduced.
Safety and documents: have a competent technician check guards, emergency stops and heater protection using an agreed safe procedure. Match the declaration, manual, electrical schematic and nameplate to the machine supplied.
Arrival and packing: check transport restraints, gantry alignment, barrel and nozzle condition, loose wiring, moisture damage and the accessory list. Repeat the acceptance print after installation. Arrange quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong
A factory demonstration may use dry virgin resin while your production feed contains moisture, fines or variable recycled material. The resulting feed interruptions, bubbles and weak layer bonding can make the demonstration irrelevant. Agree the trial material and acceptance part before ordering, and retain the settings and sample.
An extruder that works on short trials may leak, lose temperature stability or wear when processing filled resin. Software access can also depend on an account the buyer does not control. Agree sustained printing trials, cleaning and purge procedures, wear-part supply and software access. Have the configuration and exclusions checked through quote checking.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on pellet-extrusion printers from China?
Plastic-deposit printers under 8485 20 00 00 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff reading, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Metal-deposit machines elsewhere in heading 8485 carry 2%.
Can a pellet printer use recycled plastic?
Ask for trials using your proposed recycled feed. Agree contamination, moisture and pellet consistency, then inspect feed stability, bead formation and layer bonding on the acceptance part.
Is a CE certificate enough for an imported pellet printer?
Request the declaration of conformity for the supplied configuration, English instructions, electrical schematic and supporting safety evidence. Check that the machine and documents match.
What should I check when the printer arrives?
Check transport damage, gantry alignment, the screw extruder, wiring and accessories. After installation, repeat the agreed print with the agreed resin and settings, and compare it with the approved sample.
