Sourcing binder jet 3D printers from China

Binder jet 3D printers from China fall within heading 8485, with UK duty of 0% to 2% depending on the material and classification. New machinery for Great Britain needs UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Cambridge China Bridge sources binder jet 3D printers.

Duty depends on the deposited material

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 October 2026, heading 8485 covers machines for additive manufacturing and their parts. Binder jetting uses a print head to apply binder to a powder bed. The table shows potentially relevant material and parts categories; the process name alone does not settle classification.

Goods from China under the metal-deposit line carry 2% duty. The listed plaster, cement, ceramic and sand-deposit machines and parts carry 0%. The supplied facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The sand-deposit line has import and export waste controls attached. For a shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the import requirement, particularly for equipment presented as waste.

Confirm the commodity code using the deposited material, operating description and shipment contents. Classify separately supplied powder, binder and post-processing equipment separately. For related machines within the wider heading, see metal powder-bed fusion machines.

Specify the powder, binder and finished result

Agree the powder material, binder formulation, build envelope, layer settings and print-head maintenance procedure. State whether the purchase includes powder handling, curing, depowdering and any debinding or sintering equipment. Ask the supplier to print your own test geometry using the proposed material combination.

For metal parts, agree acceptance after the proposed post-processing route, including dimensional change, distortion and the required material properties. For sand moulds and cores, agree handling strength, surface condition and removal of loose sand. Record the software licence, access needed to run jobs and responsibility for replacement print heads.

New machinery placed on the Great Britain market must have UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Obtain documents for the ordered configuration and review powder containment, moving-part guards and cleaning procedures through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative metal binder jet printer order for a small engineering business under 8485 10 00 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £63,000. Duty at 2% is £1,260. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £64,260, so it is £12,852. Import taxes total £14,112; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,260 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Print system: check nozzle performance, binder delivery, recoater movement and uniform powder spreading using the agreed material.

Parts: inspect fragile printed parts before post-processing, then measure finished samples against the approved drawing and acceptance criteria.

Safety and documents: match the model and serial identity to the declaration, marking and English instructions; check guards, emergency stops and the supplied extraction connections.

Arrival: inspect transit restraints, print-head protection, powder contamination and missing accessories; repeat the agreed trial build through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A demonstration part made with a different powder or binder can conceal uneven spreading, blocked nozzles and weak printed parts. Metal samples may meet dimensions before sintering but distort afterwards. Agree acceptance on the finished result and retain the material, settings and post-processing record used for the approved sample.

Quotes can leave out curing, depowdering, extraction or the equipment needed to finish metal parts. Software access and print-head supply can also become operating constraints. Use a quote check to establish the complete supply scope and support responsibilities before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on binder jet printers from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 2% for metal-deposit machines and 0% for the listed ceramic and sand-deposit machines and parts, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the material-based classification.

What paperwork should a binder jet printer have?

New machinery placed on the Great Britain market needs UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Check that these identify the configuration supplied.

Does a metal binder jet printer include a sintering furnace?

Check the supply scope. Agree who provides debinding and sintering, which powder and binder combination is supported, and whether acceptance is based on the finished metal part.

How should I test a binder jet printer before shipment?

Use your own geometry and agreed powder and binder. Check spreading and nozzle performance, inspect printed parts, and assess finished dimensions after the proposed post-processing route.
