UK duty on paper cable identification tags

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 4821 covers paper or paperboard labels of all kinds, whether or not printed. Paper cable identification tags fit the printed or unprinted branches, with separate lines for self-adhesive and other labels.

All listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Separately, confirm with the relevant authority whether timber due diligence applies to your paper.

Confirm the commodity code using the material, printing and attachment format. For the wider heading, see our paper plant identification tags guide. Budget separately for import VAT using UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the tag and its cable attachment

Specify paper or paperboard, fibre source, thickness, dimensions, colour and writing surface. For tied tags, define the hole position, reinforcement and supplied fastening. For adhesive labels, define the adhesive, backing and intended cable sheath. Approve artwork showing cable references, text orientation and any barcode, together with a physical sample.

Agree the intended environment and trial samples on your actual cables. Check handwriting or printer compatibility, rubbing, moisture exposure and attachment strength. Treat resistance to oil, cleaners or outdoor weather as a performance claim to test before ordering.

Confirm with the relevant authority whether the paper is within the UK Timber Regulations and what timber due diligence your business should carry out before placing it on the Great Britain market. Ask whether any exception applies to bamboo-based or recovered products. For virgin wood fibre, obtain pulp-source, species and country-of-harvest information before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 60 cartons of printed tie-on paper cable identification tags under 4821 10 90 00, invoiced at £5,200 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,000, so it is £1,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identification: check text against approved artwork and the cable-reference list; scan any barcodes and look for missing, duplicated or transposed references.

Attachment: check punched holes, reinforcement and ties; pull tied samples and trial adhesive labels on the specified cable sheath.

Surface: check dimensions, thickness, clean cutting, ink rub resistance and whether the agreed pen or printer produces readable marks.

Packing: check tags remain flat and dry, batches are separated and cartons match the packing list. Set the sampling brief through our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A correctly printed tag can still identify the wrong cable when numbering is duplicated or bundles are mixed. Holes tear when the fastening pulls against thin paperboard; adhesive edges lift on curved or contaminated sheaths. Compare production samples with the approved reference list and trial the attachment on actual cables.

Moisture can soften paper, curl tags and blur handwritten references. Ink can rub away during handling. Agree storage and packing conditions, and test the finished tag with the intended marking method before approving production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on paper cable tags from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty across heading 4821, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Printing and self-adhesive construction determine the commodity line.

Do paper cable tags need timber due diligence?

Confirm with the relevant authority whether timber due diligence applies to your business when placing the paper on the Great Britain market. Check the fibre source and ask whether any exclusion applies to bamboo-based or recovered products.

Should I buy tied tags or adhesive cable labels?

Trial both on the intended cable. Tied tags depend on hole strength and fastening; adhesive labels depend on the sheath, curvature and surface condition. Specify the attachment before approving samples.

Can paper cable tags be used in damp areas?

Approve them only after a trial under the intended conditions. Check paper softening, ink smearing and attachment failure; a coating alone does not establish suitability.
