Oyster mushroom spawn: 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0602 covers other live plants, roots, cuttings, slips and mushroom spawn. Its mushroom spawn line, 0602 90 10 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension recorded. The table shows product forms sharing that tariff line.

The tariff attaches Veterinary control and Import control of organic products. Confirm with your customs broker what each requires for your Chinese shipment, using the complete carrier composition and intended organic labelling. Do not assume that the veterinary entry applies identically to grain, wood and animal-origin compost carriers.

Specify the strain and spawn carrier

Specify the oyster mushroom species and strain, grain or wood carrier, all additives, pack weight, production batch and intended growing substrate. Ask explicitly whether the carrier contains manure or other animal-origin material. Agree storage conditions, transport temperature, usable shelf life on arrival and how the supplier demonstrates culture purity.

Approve a sample through a growing trial using your own substrate and cultivation conditions. Record colonisation, contamination and fruiting performance rather than accepting photographs of the supplier’s crop as batch evidence.

For organic stock, a company trading in organic products must be certified by an approved UK organic control body. Ask that body to confirm which products you can import and the documents needed for the proposed Chinese spawn.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 bags of oyster mushroom spawn under 0602 90 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,900, so it is £1,380. Inspection checklist

Identity: match species, strain, carrier and batch labels to the purchase specification.

Condition: check mycelium coverage, unusual coloured growth, excess liquid and damaged or leaking packs.

Transport: review temperature records and compare arrival condition with the agreed storage instructions.

Performance: retain batch samples and run the agreed growing trial; record results against the approved sample. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A colonised bag can still contain contamination or perform poorly on the buyer’s substrate. Heat exposure, ageing cultures, damaged seals and a changed carrier can undermine the order. Agree acceptance criteria and keep batch records so a failed growing trial can be traced.

Border uncertainty arises when the supplier describes only “mushroom spawn” and omits carrier ingredients or organic claims. Resolve the tariff controls with your broker before dispatch, and settle organic import questions with your approved control body before committing to organic stock.
