Shiitake spawn duty and import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0602 covers other live plants, cuttings and slips, and mushroom spawn. Its mushroom spawn line, 0602 90 10 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows purchasing forms under the same tariff line, rather than separate commodity codes.

The supplied tariff record attaches veterinary control and import control of organic products to mushroom spawn. Confirm with your customs broker what these controls require for the actual carrier and ingredients before shipment. For an organic-labelled order, ask your approved UK organic control body which requirements apply to the spawn; official guidance directs product-specific questions to that body.

Specify the strain and spawn carrier

Identify the shiitake strain and whether you need grain spawn, sawdust spawn or inoculated wooden plugs. Agree the carrier ingredients, bag or plug format, batch identification, production record and intended growing substrate. Ask the supplier to describe its propagation process and contamination screening.

Agree storage conditions, packing ventilation and transport handling with the producer. Request a representative sample and assess colonisation in your own growing process before accepting a bulk batch. Keep spawn specifications separate from those for fruiting blocks or harvested mushrooms.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 bags of shiitake mushroom spawn under 0602 90 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,900, so it is £1,380. Inspection checklist

Identity: match strain, carrier, batch identification and pack contents against the purchase specification.

Condition: look for unexpected coloured growth, leaking bags, damaged filters, excess liquid and crushed plugs.

Handling: compare the transport record and arrival condition with the producer's agreed storage instructions.

Performance: retain batch samples and assess colonisation on the agreed substrate; photographs alone cannot establish viability.

What goes wrong

A batch can look colonised yet perform poorly in the buyer's process. Carrier substitutions, strain mix-ups, contamination and unsuitable transport conditions can undermine the trial result. Agree how disputed batches will be sampled and assessed before placing the order.

Avoid accepting a generic mushroom description or an organic logo as the complete purchasing specification. Resolve the tariff controls against the actual product before dispatch, and keep batch records available when investigating an arrival problem.
