Sourcing oxy-fuel plate bevellers from China

Oxy-fuel plate bevelling machines from China fall within gas-operated apparatus under heading 8468, subject to classification. The recorded duty range is 2% across its lines. Machinery supplied in Great Britain must meet machinery safety requirements, with conformity documents and marking. Cambridge China Bridge sources oxy-fuel plate bevelling machines.

2% duty on gas-operated plate bevellers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8468 covers machinery and apparatus for soldering, brazing or welding, whether or not capable of cutting, excluding heading 8515, and gas-operated surface tempering equipment. Other gas-operated machinery is listed under 8468 20 00 00. Confirm that the proposed oxy-fuel plate beveller falls within that description.

Every supplied line carries 2% duty for goods from China. The record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. The table includes complete gas-operated equipment, parts and separately supplied hand-held blowpipes; its other-machinery line is a classification comparison, not an alternative code to select merely because a machine has an electric carriage.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's operating principle, torch arrangement and supplied components. For the wider product family, see oxy-fuel profile cutting machines.

Specify the bevel and the gas system

Specify the plate material and thickness range, bevel angle range, root face, cut length and acceptable surface finish. State whether the carriage runs on rails or follows the plate edge, how the torch angle locks, and which fuel gas, nozzles, regulators, hoses and spare parts are included. Agree a trial cut on material representative of your work.

Machinery placed on the Great Britain market must be safe. Confirm with the relevant authority the applicable requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 for a technical file, declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking. Ask for documents matching the delivered configuration and an English manual. Specify the electrical supply, carriage controls and gas connections. HSE advises fitting flashback arresters to both oxygen and fuel gas hoses near the regulators.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one oxy-fuel plate bevelling machine under 8468 20 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Bevel geometry: measure the angle, root face and straightness along a trial cut; compare the result with the agreed drawing rather than judging the flame alone.

Carriage and torch: check rail alignment, smooth travel, speed adjustment, torch height and angle locking; repeat the cut to identify movement in the mount.

Gas system: check the supplied gas type, connection threads, nozzle identification and flashback arresters; have a competent tester check connections for leaks.

Arrival and documents: check rails and torch mounts for transport damage, reconcile accessories and spares, and match the nameplate, conformity declaration and English manual. Use the quality inspection guide to plan inspection.

What goes wrong

A carriage demonstration can conceal poor bevel quality. Loose angle locks, uneven travel or the wrong nozzle can leave a changing root face, rough cut surface or excessive slag. Require a measured trial cut from the actual machine being shipped and retain the settings and sample results.

Gas fittings may not match the buyer's equipment, and rails can arrive bent if poorly supported in packing. Record the connections and packing arrangement before dispatch. Check that the paperwork covers the supplied torch and drive configuration; factory verification can help assess the maker's test facilities.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on oxy-fuel plate bevelling machines from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 2% under 8468 20 00 00 for other gas-operated machinery, with no listed trade remedy. Confirm the machine's classification before declaring it.

Does an electric carriage make this an electric cutting machine?

Describe both the cutting process and the carriage drive to your customs broker. Confirm classification from the complete specification rather than the motor alone.

What documents should accompany the machine?

For machinery placed on the Great Britain market, confirm with the relevant authority which declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and English instruction requirements apply. Check that the documents identify the supplied configuration.

How do I check the bevel before shipment?

Require a trial cut on representative plate. Measure the bevel angle, root face and straightness, inspect the cut surface, and repeat the test to check carriage and torch stability.
