Sourcing oxidised soybean oil from China
Oxidised soybean oil from China normally carries 6% UK duty; the selected blend lines range from 6% to 7.70%, with anti-dumping on biodiesel blends. Confirm the chemical identity, UK REACH responsibilities and product or waste status before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources oxidised soybean oil.

Duty depends on the oil and its formulation
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 1518 covers chemically modified fats and oils, including oxidised oils, and inedible oil mixtures or preparations. Ordinary oxidised soybean oil is a candidate for 1518 00 91 80 at 6%. The table includes adjacent formulation lines for comparison, rather than interchangeable codes for the same oil.
The selected biodiesel blend lines carry 7.70% ordinary duty and a recorded residual anti-dumping rate of 54.64%. The ordinary modified-oil and other inedible-preparation lines shown carry 6%, with no recorded trade remedy or suspension. The heading's used-cooking-oil suspension is restricted to that material for biodiesel production; it is not a relief for ordinary oxidised soybean oil.
The tariff attaches waste, veterinary and CITES controls, plus seal-product controls on the modified-oil lines. Ask your customs broker to confirm the veterinary requirements against the actual ingredients. Blend lines also attach anti-dumping or countervailing registration: confirm the declaration requirements with the broker. Supply the composition and manufacturing description when confirming your commodity code. See the wider modified oils guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oxidised soybean oil, without biodiesel blending | 1518 00 91 80 | 6% | None |
| Other inedible vegetable oil preparations, potentially including oxidised soybean oil | 1518 00 99 90 | 6% | None |
| Modified oil blends with biodiesel content of 20% or less | 1518 00 91 33 | 7.7% | 54.64% residual anti-dumping |
| Modified oil blends with biodiesel content over 20%, not consigned from Canada | 1518 00 91 29 | 7.7% | 54.64% residual anti-dumping |
Specify oxidation treatment and process performance
Specify the soybean feedstock, oxidation treatment, whether the oil is blown, and every added oil, solvent or other ingredient. Ask the factory to distinguish oxidised oil from an epoxidised grade in its product description and analysis. Agree viscosity with its measurement temperature, acid value, iodine value, moisture, insoluble matter and colour, with the test methods recorded.
Assess UK REACH registration for the importing business: registration is per substance and legal entity. Obtain the safety data sheet and check it against the supplied formulation; confirm applicable safety data sheet requirements with HSE. Agree storage conditions, drum lining and a retained sample. Use a trial in your actual coating or lubricant formulation to set acceptance criteria.
Establish product or waste status before shipment. For waste subject to notification controls, the exporter in China must apply to its competent authority for consent. If any ingredient raises CITES questions, check the permit route: importing CITES specimens requires a permit. Seal products for sale must qualify under the Inuit and other indigenous communities exemption. Request ingredient traceability rather than treating attached tariff controls as proof of the oil's composition.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 tonnes of oxidised soybean oil in sealed drums, illustrative order under 1518 00 91 80, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,500. Duty at 6% is £1,950. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £34,450, so it is £6,890. Import taxes total £8,840; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,950 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the purchase specification, batch analysis and drum labels; check the oxidation treatment and all declared ingredients.
Performance: independently sample the batch for viscosity at the agreed temperature, acid value, moisture and colour; compare a process trial with the approved sample.
Packing: inspect drum linings, closures, leaks and contamination on arrival; retain a sample before transferring the oil into shared storage.
Documents: match batch references across the analysis, safety data sheet and shipping papers; check composition and product or waste evidence. See quality inspection explained.

What goes wrong
An order described only as modified soybean oil leaves the treatment and formulation unclear. A substituted grade can behave differently in the buyer's process. Viscosity results taken at different temperatures cannot be compared reliably; moisture, sediment or a darker batch can also undermine an approved formulation.
Undeclared blending creates both performance and classification problems. Waste paperwork cannot be replaced by a commercial invoice describing the oil as a product. Hold a disputed batch separately, compare it with the retained sample and obtain independent analysis before accepting a supplier's explanation.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on oxidised soybean oil from China?
Ordinary chemically modified oil under 1518 00 91 80 carries 6%. The selected biodiesel blend lines carry 7.70% plus a recorded residual anti-dumping rate of 54.64%. Classification depends on composition.
Can I order using only the name oxidised soybean oil?
Specify the treatment, ingredients and intended process. Agree viscosity with its measurement temperature, acid value, moisture and colour, then test the batch against an approved sample.
Does oxidised soybean oil need waste import documents?
Establish whether the shipment is a product or waste. Waste needs the applicable shipment documents; for notified waste, the exporter applies to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent.
Does my supplier's paperwork settle UK REACH registration?
Registration is per substance and legal entity. Assess the importing business's registration position separately, and check that the safety data sheet describes the actual oil supplied.
