Duty and classification for outdoor wireless bridges

Heading 8517 covers communication apparatus and parts. An outdoor wireless bridge receiving, converting and transmitting network data is a candidate for 8517 62 00 00. The table also covers a conditional apparatus category and separately imported aerials and parts; these are not interchangeable codes for a complete bridge. For the wider heading, see wireless access points.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 10 December 2026, all supplied lines show 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is listed. The selected table lines have no attached import controls. Elsewhere in the heading, 8517 14 00 00 has a supplementary-unit import entry for wireless telephones; confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker if importing goods classified there. Import VAT is separate.

Give your broker the bridge's data functions, radio configuration, aerial arrangement and shipment contents. Confirm classification through finding your commodity code. The worked order uses illustrative FOB and freight values, not a supplier quotation.

Specify the outdoor link and supplied power system

Specify whether the order contains matched pairs or individual units, the intended link path, clear sight between mounting positions, required usable throughput and network interfaces. Agree an acceptance test using the intended traffic and installation arrangement. Record the aerial type, mounting adjustment, hardware revision and firmware configuration.

Ask for the operating frequency bands, transmitted power settings and confirmation that the proposed configuration suits the intended UK outdoor installation. Agree enclosure sealing, cable-entry arrangements, mounting hardware and resistance to the site's exposure. Specify the power injector's output, polarity, connector and compatibility with the bridge; approve the supplied mains adaptor and plug together.

Before placing the equipment on the Great Britain market, the importer must ensure the manufacturer has carried out the relevant conformity assessment. Review radio-equipment safety, electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum evidence for the actual bridge configuration. Confirm hazardous-substance compliance and retain the declaration of conformity. Arrange model-matched document review through testing and certification.

Commercial importers supplying electrical equipment to the UK market have producer responsibilities, including annual registration. Assess whether the bridge falls within the consumer connectable-product security regime; confirm with the relevant authority whether an accompanying statement of compliance is required. Agree administrator access, firmware support and configuration recovery before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business trial batch of boxed outdoor wireless bridge pairs; FOB and freight values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8517 62 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,000, so it is £600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Link performance: check pairing, usable traffic throughput, packet loss and stability with the agreed firmware, aerial alignment and network configuration.

Power and recovery: check the supplied injectors and adaptors, operation with the intended cable arrangement, restart after power loss and retention of settings.

Outdoor assembly: inspect enclosure joints, cable seals, connector covers, mounting brackets and fixings against the approved sample; check that adjustment holds securely.

Identity and documents: match model identifiers, hardware revisions, aerials and supplied power equipment to the approved specification and supporting reports. Include installation instructions and administrator access in the quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A short bench demonstration does not establish performance across the buyer's outdoor path. Obstructions, poor alignment and local interference can reduce usable throughput. Test representative traffic and record the installation conditions rather than accepting an advertised radio link speed as delivered network performance.

Similar-looking injectors can have incompatible outputs or wiring. Cable entries can leak when seals are missing or fitted incorrectly. Firmware substitutions can change pairing, management access or radio settings. Record the approved configuration and require approval before substitutions.
