Sourcing GPON optical line terminals from China

The supplied tariff lines have a flat duty range of 0% for goods from China. Before selling wired GPON optical line terminals in Great Britain, check the manufacturer's electromagnetic-compatibility conformity assessment. Prove compatibility with the intended subscriber terminals. Cambridge China Bridge sources GPON optical line terminals.

Duty and classification for GPON line terminals

Heading 8517 covers communications apparatus and parts. GPON optical line terminals receiving, converting and transmitting network data are candidates for 8517 62 00 00. The table repeats this code for different complete-equipment configurations; separately imported parts need their own assessment. For related equipment within the wider heading, see GPON optical network terminals.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 10 December 2026, all supplied lines show 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. The table codes have no attached import controls. Elsewhere, 8517 14 00 00 has a supplementary-unit import entry for certain wireless telephones; if importing those goods, confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker. Import VAT is separate.

Give your broker the data functions, chassis configuration and separately imported parts list. Confirm classification through finding your commodity code. The worked order's FOB value and freight are illustrative, rather than a quotation; see UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify the optical network and firmware

Specify GPON port count, uplink interfaces, optical module models, connector type, optical power budget and intended splitter arrangement. Record supported subscriber-terminal models and firmware versions. Approve registration, service provisioning and management against your actual subscriber terminals, rather than accepting a general compatibility statement.

Agree traffic capacity with the intended service profiles active. Specify power input, redundancy, cooling direction, rack fittings and alarm outputs. Record firmware licences, administrator access, configuration export, update access and recovery arrangements. Require approval before substitutions to optical modules, line cards or firmware.

For sale in Great Britain, check the manufacturer's electromagnetic-compatibility conformity assessment and importer identification. Relevant instructions must be in English. For hazardous-substance compliance, confirm manufacturer compliance and retain the declaration of conformity. Request electrical-safety evidence matching the supplied power configuration. Use testing and certification for document review.

Commercial importers supplying electrical equipment to the UK market have producer responsibilities, including annual registration. Confirm how the producer definition applies to your supply model, particularly equipment imported solely for your own use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial batch of compact GPON optical line terminals for a business installer under 8517 62 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,000, so it is £600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Optical interfaces: compare installed module identities and connectors with the specification; check optical readings, port alarms and subscriber registration through the agreed splitter arrangement.

Services: check provisioning, subscriber isolation, traffic forwarding and bandwidth profiles with the intended subscriber terminals and agreed traffic load.

Recovery: check configuration backup and restoration, administrator credential changes, alarm reporting and service recovery after power loss.

Build and documents: inspect rack fittings, cooling, power supplies and connector condition; match hardware and firmware identities to conformity documents and instructions. Record acceptance checks in a quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A subscriber terminal can register successfully yet fail service provisioning or remote management. A short bench fibre also fails to demonstrate operation through the intended splitter and optical losses. Test the complete proposed configuration and preserve the accepted firmware and service settings.

Substituted optical modules, changed firmware and unavailable feature licences can disrupt deployment. Incorrect cooling direction or power-input assumptions can prevent installation in the intended rack. Agree the supplied configuration, licence ownership and recovery procedure before ordering.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on GPON optical line terminals from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty under 8517 62 00 00 and throughout the supplied lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm classification; import VAT is separate.

Will a Chinese GPON line terminal work with my existing subscriber terminals?

Test your actual terminal models and firmware. Check registration, service provisioning, remote management and traffic performance together. Successful optical connection alone does not prove compatibility.

What documents should I request from the GPON terminal factory?

Request model-matched conformity declarations, supporting test reports, English instructions, optical module details and power specifications. Include firmware identification, licence terms and recovery instructions.

What should I check before accepting a GPON line terminal shipment?

Match hardware, optical modules and firmware to the approved configuration. Test subscriber services under load, configuration restoration, alarms and power recovery. Check cooling direction and supplied rack fittings.
