Sourcing outdoor pillar clocks from China

Outdoor pillar clocks from China carry UK duty of 2% to 4%: electrically operated clocks, including battery quartz models, pay 4%; purely mechanical clocks pay 2%. Mains-powered models need electrical safety evidence before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources outdoor pillar clocks.

Outdoor pillar clock duty: 4% or 2%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 9105 covers other clocks, including the clock formats relevant to outdoor pillar clocks. Electrically operated clocks carry 4% duty on goods from China, while purely mechanical clocks carry 2%. Battery quartz movements count as electrically operated. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches a CITES import control. If the proposed clock contains protected-species material, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable species-specific documents before ordering. Official guidance states that species listed in Annex A, B or C need a permit; confirm the precise procedure with the broker. The tariff also lists CITES export controls and a DCMS export licence entry; ask the broker to distinguish these from the import requirements.

The table includes complete pillar clocks and wall-clock formats potentially used in pillar assemblies. Classification depends on the goods presented, so do not select a wall-clock code merely because a dial is attached to a pillar. Confirm the commodity code using drawings, movement details and the shipment contents. See the wider clock guide for other clock formats.

Specify the pillar, clock head and outdoor exposure

Agree pillar height, dial size, viewing directions, hand design, movement torque and time-setting access. Specify whether faces share a controller or use separate movements. Record the power supply, illumination, cable route, access-door lock and replacement parts. Ask the installer to approve the base plate, anchor layout and foundation interface for the intended site.

Specify housing material, coating, glazing, door seals, cable-entry seals and condensation management. Ask for weather-resistance evidence for the assembled clock head, including its service door and cable entries. A sealed movement alone does not demonstrate that the complete enclosure withstands outdoor exposure.

Mains-powered clocks and mains adaptors need electrical safety evidence. Electrical equipment within the safety regulations must have easily understandable English instructions. Assess whether electromagnetic compatibility rules apply to the powered assembly; hazardous-substance restrictions cover electrical equipment unless specifically excluded. For electrically operated clocks and supplied batteries, confirm any waste electrical equipment and battery producer obligations with the relevant environmental regulator. Arrange testing and certification around the actual configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of electrically operated outdoor pillar clocks for a grounds contractor under 9105 91 00 00, invoiced at £25,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,000. Duty at 4% is £1,120. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,120, so it is £5,824. Import taxes total £6,944; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,120 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Movement and faces: run the assembled head against a reference time source, check hand clearance throughout rotation, compare all faces and test recovery after interrupting power.

Weather sealing: check glazing, door compression and cable-entry seals against the approved sample; inspect inside after the agreed water-exposure test for moisture and condensation.

Pillar and anchoring: compare base holes, welds, access doors and cable routes with approved drawings; inspect coating coverage at edges, joints and concealed surfaces.

Electrical and delivery: match the clock, adaptor and illumination to the supplied reports and declaration; check English instructions, damaged glazing, bent hands, loose fixings and labelled packing components on arrival.

What goes wrong

A movement that works with small sample hands can stall with the production hand set. Separate faces can drift apart, and a controller hidden inside the pillar can be difficult to reset. Test the finished head with its actual hands, illumination and controller, and demonstrate servicing before approving production.

Water enters through access doors and cable entries, coatings fail around welds, and base holes arrive incompatible with the foundation. Glazing can crack when the head moves inside its crate. Approve the installation drawings and packing supports, then use quality inspection to compare the shipment with the agreed assembly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on outdoor pillar clocks from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 4% for electrically operated clocks, including battery quartz models, and 2% for purely mechanical clocks, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers an outdoor pillar clock?

Consider 9105 91 00 00 for electrically operated other clocks and 9105 99 00 00 for other mechanical clocks. Ask your broker to confirm classification of the complete shipment.

How do I check that a pillar clock is weatherproof?

Request evidence for the complete enclosure, including glazing, service doors and cable entries. Inspect inside after an agreed water-exposure test and check how condensation is managed.

What should I agree before ordering a pillar clock?

Approve the dial and hands, movement torque, power supply, service access, weather sealing, base plate and anchor drawings. Confirm who checks the foundation interface and supplies replacement parts.
