Chess-clock duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 9105 covers other clocks. For chess clocks within this heading, electrically operated models fall under 9105 91 00 00 at 4%, and mechanical models under 9105 99 00 00 at 2%. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions for these lines.

The tariff attaches a CITES import control, alongside CITES export and cultural-object export controls. CITES specimens need an import permit. For wooden cases or animal-derived trim, identify the material and ask your customs broker to confirm whether the China shipment needs CITES documents. The export controls should be checked separately if you later export the clocks.

The table shows product variants sharing the relevant tariff lines. Confirm the movement and complete product with your broker using finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see wall clocks and alarm clocks.

Specify timing modes and player controls

Define digital or mechanical operation, display visibility, paddle travel, base grip and power source. For digital models, specify countdown, increment, delay, staged time controls, pause, restart and manual time correction. Describe exactly when added time is credited and what happens when a player runs out of time. Approve a sample with written operating sequences.

UK businesses importing consumer products are responsible for their safety. For Great Britain, electromagnetic compatibility rules cover electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. Ask for an assessment of the digital model and supporting reports. Confirm waste electrical equipment responsibilities for electrically operated clocks and battery producer responsibilities for supplied batteries with the relevant authority.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,000 battery-powered digital chess clocks under 9105 91 00 00, invoiced at £25,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £26,500. Duty at 4% is £1,060. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £27,560, so it is £5,512. Import taxes total £6,572; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,060 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Timing: compare each player's countdown against a reference timer and run the agreed increment, delay and staged-control sequences. Check pause, correction and restart without unintended changes to the other player's time.

Paddles and display: operate both sides repeatedly, checking that each press stops the active timer and starts the other. Look for missed presses, double switching, unreadable viewing angles and loose controls.

Power and construction: check battery contacts, low-battery behaviour, compartment security and base stability. On mechanical models, check winding, hand clearance and flag operation. Inspect cases and packed clocks for transit damage.

Evidence and labels: match reports to the supplied model and power source. Under hazardous-substance rules for electrical equipment in Great Britain, importers must check that manufacturer details and conformity marking are correct and clearly identifiable before sale. Compare the delivered labels with the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A clock can keep time yet apply the wrong increment or lose the selected programme after a restart. Paddle faults can leave a player's timer running after a press. Mechanical flags can stick, and weak battery contacts can reset a digital clock when it is moved.

Turn the approved sample's operating sequences into an arrival checklist. Record failures by model and batch, and agree correction with the factory before accepting replacements. Check the actual firmware and controls supplied, rather than relying on a catalogue description.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on chess clocks from China?

Under heading 9105, electrically operated chess clocks pay 4% and mechanical models 2%. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Are battery-powered chess clocks electrically operated?

Yes. Battery-powered clocks belong to the electrically operated branch. For chess clocks within heading 9105, check 9105 91 00 00 with your customs broker.

How do I test increment and delay modes?

Write the expected timing sequence, then alternate paddle presses while comparing displayed time with a reference timer. Check when time is added, pause behaviour and manual corrections.

Do digital chess clocks bring battery and waste obligations?

Confirm waste electrical equipment responsibilities for electrically operated clocks and battery producer responsibilities for batteries supplied with them with the relevant authority. Secure the battery compartment and check the supplied cell type.
