Sourcing ocean current meters from China

Oceanographic current meters and related instruments within heading 9015 carry 0% UK duty from China across the relevant lines. For electronic models within scope, confirm electromagnetic compatibility conformity and marking requirements with the relevant authority before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources oceanographic current meters.

Duty and classification

Heading 9015 covers oceanographic, hydrographic and hydrological instruments, alongside surveying and other scientific instruments. Specify whether the meter measures current at a point or profiles the water column. The table includes related categories and parts; it does not mean that a current meter can be declared under any listed code. See the hydrographic echo sounder guide for related instruments within the wider heading.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It attaches a DCMS Export Licence control. Official guidance requires licences for exporting cultural objects from Great Britain; confirm with your customs broker how the listed control and its document waiver apply to your shipment.

Give your broker the measurement principle, intended use, technical sheet and details of separately supplied parts to confirm the commodity code. Import VAT is normally 20%; use the import duty and VAT guide when preparing the landed-cost calculation. The worked order is illustrative, rather than a supplier quotation.

Specify velocity measurement and deployment

Choose point measurement or current profiling, then agree velocity range, accuracy, resolution, sampling settings and deployment depth. For acoustic models, specify operating frequency, usable measurement distance, the unmeasured zone near the transducer and performance in the expected sediment conditions. For mechanical models, agree rotor starting behaviour and bearing maintenance.

Specify housing materials, seals, wet connectors, mounting orientation, heading and tilt measurement, battery configuration and retrieval method. Agree the raw-data format, timestamps, coordinate conventions and software access. Ask for example files from the exact model before approving a sample.

For electronic models within scope, confirm electromagnetic compatibility conformity and UKCA or CE marking requirements for Great Britain with the relevant authority. For wireless models, confirm whether assessment under radio equipment rules is needed. Check battery and waste electrical equipment compliance where applicable. If acting as an electrical equipment producer, register annually. For models within hazardous-substance rules, products must show the importer’s name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A small demonstration batch of oceanographic current meters, illustrative and subject to classification confirmation under 9015 80 80 00, invoiced at £38,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £40,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £40,000, so it is £8,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Measurement: compare sampled meters with a traceable velocity reference over the agreed operating range; match calibration records to serial numbers and check direction, heading and tilt outputs.

Housing: pressure-test assembled units against the agreed deployment specification; inspect seals, connector caps, cable strain relief and wetted materials before and after testing.

Data: record a trial deployment, retrieve raw files and open them in the buyer’s software; check timestamps, units, coordinate conventions and recovery after a power interruption.

Delivery: check model labels, conformity documents, calibration records, batteries, mounting hardware and protective cases against the purchase specification; repeat functional checks on arrival.

What goes wrong

A meter can produce plausible readings while its heading offset or coordinate convention gives the wrong current direction. Acoustic returns can deteriorate in unsuitable water conditions, while fouling or worn bearings can affect mechanical meters. Agree an acceptance test that represents the intended deployment rather than relying on a still-water demonstration.

Leaks at wet connectors, damaged seals and inaccessible data files can make an otherwise working instrument unusable. Keep the approved configuration and example dataset with the order, and arrange testing and certification support before approving shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on oceanographic current meters from China?

The relevant heading 9015 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the exact commodity code for your model.

Do oceanographic current meters need UKCA or CE marking?

For electronic models within the electromagnetic compatibility rules, confirm conformity and appropriate UKCA or CE marking requirements for Great Britain with the relevant authority. For wireless models, also confirm whether assessment under radio equipment rules is needed.

How should I check current-meter accuracy?

Compare the meter with a traceable velocity reference across the agreed range. Match calibration records to serial numbers and check direction, heading, tilt and exported data as well as speed.

Can a waterproof claim prove the meter is suitable for deployment?

Ask for pressure-test evidence for the assembled instrument at the agreed deployment conditions. Check wet connectors and seals, and repeat functional and leak checks after testing.
