Sourcing non-cellular PMMA sheets from China

Non-cellular acrylic PMMA sheets from China normally pay 6% UK duty; listed specialist PMMA sheets and films have 0% suspensions. Confirm the material and construction before choosing a code, and match any suspension to its exact description. Food-contact sheet needs compliance evidence. Cambridge China Bridge sources non-cellular acrylic PMMA sheets.

Normally 6%, with specialist suspensions

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 3920 covers non-cellular plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip that are not reinforced, laminated, supported or similarly combined with other materials. This guide concerns solid acrylic PMMA sheet. The published background guide gives ordinary PMMA sheet a 6% rate; the supplied tariff extract contains specialist PMMA lines rather than the ordinary sheet line.

The listed PMMA film and specialist sheet lines have a 6% standard duty and a 0% autonomous suspension. Their records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing the listed products. Obtain a broker's confirmation before relying on it. The table also identifies adjacent acrylic copolymer and PMMA-topped polycarbonate films, which are different products.

Confirm the commodity code using the polymer, construction and specialist specification, rather than the supplier's description of 'acrylic'. Do not use a technical film code for ordinary sheet. For another sheet family within the wider heading, see cellulose acetate sheets.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026.

Specify the PMMA grade and finished surface

State whether the sheet is cast or extruded, the resin grade, whether recycled material is permitted, thickness and tolerance, length, width, flatness, colour and finish. Agree acceptable scratches, inclusions, bubbles and edge chips against a retained sample. Specify protective masking, how it should peel, and packing that keeps sheet faces and edges apart.

For clear signage or display panels, agree optical clarity and colour consistency across the batch. For outdoor use, request evidence supporting the weathering and UV claims. Trial cutting, drilling, polishing and bonding with your own process before approving the grade. For glazing, request the fire classification data behind the supplier's claim.

UK REACH addresses chemical risks in articles as well as substances and mixtures; ask for information on additives and coatings. For food-contact sheet, confirm with the relevant food authority what declaration of compliance and migration evidence is required for the actual material and intended use. Importers and sellers of consumer products are responsible for their safety. Agree the intended use before commissioning testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 specialist PMMA sheets; illustrative order and values, subject to suspension eligibility under 3920 51 00 50, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £19,500. Duty at 6% is £1,170. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,670, so it is £4,134. Import taxes total £5,304; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,170 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure thickness at the corners and centre, check length and width, and assess flatness against the agreed specification.

Optics: remove masking from sample areas and inspect for haze, colour variation, bubbles, inclusions and scratches under consistent lighting.

Fabrication: trial cutting and drilling on batch samples; check edge quality, cracking and compatibility with the intended bonding process.

Packing and identity: check masking on both faces, edge protection, batch labels and the match between supplied grade and test documents. Arrange quality inspection before shipment and repeat arrival checks.

What goes wrong

A sheet can look acceptable beneath its masking yet show scratches or haze when uncovered. Uneven thickness affects fittings, bowed sheets complicate mounting, and mixed shades become visible when panels sit together. Edge damage and cracks around drilled holes can make otherwise usable panels unsuitable for the job.

Problems also arise when a replacement grade is supplied without approval or a report covers a different material. Keep an approved sample and batch records, and compare the delivered sheet with them before fabrication. A generic acrylic datasheet does not establish eligibility for a specialist tariff suspension.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on PMMA sheets from China?

Ordinary PMMA sheet normally pays 6%. The supplied specialist PMMA sheet and film lines show 6% standard duty with 0% suspensions. Their records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can ordinary acrylic sheet use the specialist suspension?

Only if it matches the specialist line's description and suspension conditions. An invoice saying 'acrylic sheet' is insufficient; have your broker check the material specification.

Should I order cast or extruded acrylic sheet?

Specify the route explicitly and trial the grade with your cutting, drilling and bonding process. Approve thickness tolerance, optical appearance and finished edges before placing the order.

What documents do I need for food-contact acrylic sheet?

Obtain a declaration of compliance and migration testing for the actual food-contact material. Check that the evidence covers the supplied grade and intended use.
