Sourcing nickel-plated steel sheet from China

Nickel-plated non-alloy steel sheet at least 600 mm wide has a listed UK duty of 50% in the supplied tariff snapshot. Match the coating and processing to the commodity line: the tin-mill anti-dumping notice covers tin and chromium coatings, rather than nickel-only plating. Cambridge China Bridge sources nickel-plated steel sheet.

Duty and the coating-specific remedy

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7210 covers clad, plated or coated flat-rolled iron or non-alloy steel at least 600 mm wide. For plain nickel-plated material without further working beyond the listed treatments, the relevant supplied line is 7210 90 80 91. The table repeats that line for different supply forms; these are not separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied line lists 50% third-country duty for China, 49.98% residual anti-dumping, an anti-dumping or countervailing registration control, and no suspension or countervailing duty. However, the official tin-mill notice limits its remedy to tinplate and chromium-coated products, so nickel-only plating falls outside that description. It also removes the earlier registration requirement. The snapshot still attaches the registration control; ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement and treatment of goods outside the remedy's scope.

Send the broker the steel composition, coating description, width and processing history before confirming the commodity code. Check the declaration-date duty and any available quota rather than treating this snapshot as a guaranteed landed cost. For other coatings within the wider heading, see chromium-coated steel sheet.

Specify the nickel layer and forming behaviour

Specify the non-alloy steel grade, sheet thickness, width, length, flatness and edge condition. Describe whether nickel is applied to each face, the agreed coating thickness or mass on each face, surface finish, oiling and any treatment after plating. Ask the factory to identify the steel mill and plating facility, and keep batch references linked through both processes.

Agree a forming trial using your intended tooling. Check coating adhesion after bending or drawing, exposed steel at cut edges, and compatibility with your welding or joining process. Approve a physical sample and written acceptance criteria before production.

UK REACH generally covers substances in articles as well as substances and mixtures. Ask for the composition of the coating and surface treatments, then assess the obligations for your supply-chain role and intended use before selling the material.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of nickel-plated non-alloy steel sheet under 7210 90 80 91, invoiced at £21,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £23,000. Duty at 50% is £11,500. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £34,500, so it is £6,900. Import taxes total £18,400; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £11,500 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Traceability: match sheet or coil labels to mill certificates, plating records and the packing list.

Dimensions: measure thickness, width, length and flatness against the purchase specification; inspect cut edges for burrs and damage.

Nickel layer: check the agreed coating measurements, bare spots, scratches, blistering and adhesion after the approved forming trial.

Packing: check moisture protection, separators, straps and lifting arrangements. Solid wood packaging used to import into Great Britain must meet the applicable international phytosanitary standard.

What goes wrong

A bright surface can hide an uneven nickel layer or unsuitable base steel. Material may look acceptable flat but crack or lose coating during drawing. Damp packing can leave corrosion at exposed edges. Compare arrival samples with the approved sample and retain photographs and batch references through your quality inspection process.

A tariff line can display a remedy whose product description does not cover your actual coating. Using the displayed residual rate without checking scope can distort the cost calculation. Have the broker reconcile the nickel-only specification with the notice and the registration entry before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on nickel-plated steel sheet from China?

The supplied snapshot lists 50% for 7210 90 80 91. It also displays 49.98% residual anti-dumping, but the official tin-mill remedy describes tin and chromium coatings. Ask your broker to confirm scope and declaration-date duty.

Does nickel-plated steel sheet attract tin-mill anti-dumping duty?

Nickel-only plating falls outside the notice's description of tinplate and chromium-coated steel. Give your broker the full coating specification, including any additional layers, to confirm the treatment.

What should I specify when ordering nickel-plated steel sheet?

Specify the base steel grade, dimensions and tolerances, nickel coverage and thickness or mass on each face, finish, edge condition and packing. Agree coating adhesion checks using your intended forming process.

How do I check nickel-plated steel sheet on arrival?

Match batch labels to certificates, measure dimensions and coating, inspect scratches and bare areas, and repeat the approved forming trial. Check packing for moisture and document defects before processing the batch.
