Sourcing copper-plated steel sheet from China
The supplied tariff snapshot lists 50% duty across the relevant coated, clad and painted steel lines. Confirm the coating and processing before choosing a code: a tin-mill anti-dumping entry does not establish that copper plating is covered. Cambridge China Bridge sources copper-plated steel sheet.

UK duty and the coating distinction
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7210 covers clad, plated or coated flat-rolled iron or non-alloy steel of a width of 600 mm or more. For copper-plated sheet, 7210 90 80 91 is a candidate to confirm with your broker. The table also includes related clad and painted finishes for comparison; they are not interchangeable classifications.
The snapshot lists 50% third-country duty on these rows, with no suspensions and no separate steel-measure flag. It attaches 49.98% residual anti-dumping and registration to the candidate line. However, the official tin-mill notice defines tin- and chromium-coated goods and removes its registration requirement. Ask your broker to reconcile the attached control and product scope before declaring copper-plated sheet. The painted comparison line separately lists 13.60% anti-dumping and 44.70% countervailing duty.
Give your broker the steel composition, width, plating process, coating layers and details of cutting or further working. Use our guide to finding your commodity code. For related material within the wider heading, see nickel-plated steel sheet. Confirm the declaration treatment before using the illustrative order values.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other coated steel, surface-treated only: candidate for copper-plated sheet | 7210 90 80 91 | 50% | 49.98% residual anti-dumping |
| Clad steel, surface-treated only or simply cut into non-rectangular shapes | 7210 90 30 10 | 50% | 49.98% residual anti-dumping |
| Clad steel, otherwise worked | 7210 90 30 90 | 50% | 49.98% residual anti-dumping |
| Painted, varnished or plastic-coated non-alloy steel, subject to exclusions | 7210 70 80 91 | 50% | 13.60% residual anti-dumping; 44.70% residual countervailing |
Specify the copper layer and steel underneath
State the steel grade, temper, sheet dimensions, thickness tolerances and flatness. Specify copper thickness on each face, coverage at edges, any intermediate coating, finish and protective lacquer. Distinguish electroplating from bonded copper cladding and copper-coloured paint. Agree how coating thickness and adhesion will be tested, and approve a sample after the bending, soldering or finishing process you intend to use.
Obtain the composition of the plating, intermediate layers and surface treatments. REACH restrictions can limit, ban or impose conditions on substances in articles; check applicable restrictions against the actual materials. For decorative work, agree an acceptable colour sample and the treatment of visible scratches, tarnish and exposed steel.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: A pallet of cut-to-length copper-plated sheets, subject to classification confirmation; illustrative values under 7210 90 80 91, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,000. Duty at 50% is £3,500. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,500, so it is £2,100. Import taxes total £5,600; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,500 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match pallet and batch references to the mill and plating records; verify the substrate and coating stack against the order.
Dimensions: measure sheet thickness, width, length and flatness; check cut edges for burrs and distortion.
Copper layer: check thickness across sampled sheets, bare patches, pinholes and adhesion after the agreed forming test.
Finish and packing: compare colour and gloss with the approved sample; inspect for tarnish, rust, rubbing damage and moisture inside the wrapping.

What goes wrong
A copper-coloured finish can conceal a different coating process. Uneven plating leaves thin areas, while poor adhesion becomes visible when sheets are bent. Scratches and exposed cut edges can reveal the steel underneath. Inspect a production sample after fabrication, rather than approving appearance alone.
Classification also fails when a supplier describes plated, clad and lacquered sheet as the same product. Match the actual layer structure and processing to the declaration, and resolve the snapshot's registration entry with your broker. Agree inspection methods through our quality inspection guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on copper-plated steel sheet from China?
The supplied snapshot lists 50% on the candidate line 7210 90 80 91. It also attaches 49.98% anti-dumping, but the official notice concerns tin- and chromium-coated goods. Confirm scope and declaration treatment with your broker.
Is copper-plated steel sheet the same as solid copper sheet?
No. Copper-plated sheet has a steel substrate and a copper surface layer. Specify both materials and the layer thickness; do not buy from colour or a product name alone.
How do I check whether the copper coating will peel?
Agree an adhesion test and a forming trial that reflect your fabrication process. Test production samples after bending or other intended working, and inspect for blistering, cracking and separation.
What should I specify for decorative copper-plated sheet?
Specify the copper finish, colour sample, gloss, protective treatment, visible-face acceptance criteria and packing. Agree how scratches, tarnish and exposed edges will be assessed.
