8% on needle roller bearings

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 October 2026, heading 8482 covers ball or roller bearings. Needle roller bearings, including cage and needle roller assemblies, fall under 8482 40 00 00 and carry 8% duty on goods from China. Loose bearing needles under 8482 91 90 90 carry 6%.

The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls for the selected lines. There is no suspension on complete needle roller bearings or loose needles. Other bearing parts under 8482 99 00 90 have a 0.00 % autonomous suspension, subject to its exclusion for mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products. The listed unfinished steel rings carry 8%.

Confirm the commodity code using the drawing and the condition of the goods as shipped. Do not classify loose needles as complete bearings or assume all rings qualify for a suspended line. See the wider bearing guide for other bearing families.

Specify the bearing and its mating raceway

State whether you need a drawn-cup bearing, a machined-ring bearing or a cage and needle assembly. Specify bore, outside diameter, width, open or closed ends, seals, cage material, lubrication and operating load and speed. Confirm whether an inner ring is included. A designation alone can leave these details unresolved.

Where needles run directly on the shaft, agree the shaft raceway hardness, surface finish and dimensional tolerance with the bearing supplier. For assemblies without bearing rings, also agree the housing raceway. Approve the drawing and a sample installed in the intended mating parts before placing the production order.

For factory-applied branding, contact the trade mark owner before using its mark. Verify the authenticity of branded stock rather than relying on packaging photographs. Import declarations must include the commodity code. Agree who will prepare the declaration and provide them with the product drawing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 machined-ring needle roller bearings under 8482 40 00 00, invoiced at £36,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £37,500. Duty at 8% is £3,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £40,500, so it is £8,100. Import taxes total £11,100; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions and fit: measure bore, outside diameter and width against the approved drawing. Check drawn-cup bearings using the agreed mounting fixture, and verify clearance in representative mating parts.

Needles and cage: inspect roller surfaces for scoring, rust and damaged ends. Check cage integrity, needle retention and the supplier's steel and heat-treatment records.

Lubrication and rotation: check grease or oil against the order, inspect opened samples for contamination, and run mounted samples under the agreed load for roughness or overheating.

Identity and packing: match bearing markings and lot references to the order, confirm any inner rings and seals are present, and inspect rust protection and moisture damage. Agree the sampling scope through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A bearing supplied without an expected inner ring can leave the shaft carrying the rolling contact. An unsuitable shaft surface can wear even when the bearing itself passes dimensional checks. Drawn cups can distort during fitting, while an unsuitable housing fit changes clearance and causes binding.

Mixed variants, damaged cages, contaminated lubricant and weak rust protection cause avoidable failures. Keep the approved drawing, mounted sample and inspection results tied to the production lot. Investigate rough running before accepting a replacement bearing with the same designation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on needle roller bearings from China?

Complete needle roller bearings and cage and needle assemblies carry 8%. Loose needles carry 6%. Eligible other bearing parts have a 0.00 % suspension. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping duty.

Do needle roller bearings come with an inner ring?

Some do; others run directly on the shaft. State whether an inner ring is included and agree the shaft raceway specification before approving the sample.

How do I check drawn-cup needle bearings?

Agree a mounting fixture and inspection method with the supplier. Check dimensions and running clearance in representative mating parts, then inspect needle retention, cage condition and rotation.

Can a factory put another bearing brand on my order?

Contact the trade mark owner before using its mark. A licence is a formal agreement to use someone else's trade mark. Verify branded stock and avoid unauthorised factory-applied branding.
