UK duty on natural-stone bollards

Heading 6802 covers worked monumental or building stone and articles made from it, with exclusions stated in the heading description. For natural-stone bollards, distinguish granite, marble and other calcareous stone from other stone, then identify whether the article is simply sawn, carved or otherwise worked. The table selects finished-bollard lines; it is not an automatic classification for every stone post.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all supplied lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Solid wood packing has separate requirements even though the stone lines have no attached controls. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Give your broker the stone identity, photographs, manufacturing process and net weight to confirm the commodity code. Do not select a carved line merely because the bollard has a shaped top. For related products within the wider heading, see natural-stone balustrades.

Stone, profile and fixing details

Specify the quarry and stone type, an approved colour range, overall height, exposed height, cross-section, top profile and surface finish. Include drawings for the buried portion or base plate, fixing holes, sockets and any chain attachment. Have the installer agree the foundation and anchoring arrangement before the factory cuts the stone.

Ask for outdoor water-absorption and frost-resistance evidence for the proposed stone. Agree which repairs, filled fissures and colour variations are acceptable. Treat vehicle-impact performance as a separate purchase specification: request evidence for the complete bollard and fixing arrangement before buying it for that purpose.

For permanent installation, ask a compliance adviser to establish the applicable construction-product standard, documentation and marking route for the exact product and intended use. Great Britain guidance says products not covered or not fully covered by a designated standard may be covered by a technical assessment document. Do not assume a report for paving covers a bollard.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a container consignment of non-carved granite bollards for a landscaping contractor under 6802 93 10 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Stone and finish: compare the batch with the approved colour range; inspect wet and dry faces for cracks, filled fissures, chips and inconsistent finishing.

Dimensions and fittings: measure the profile, base and fixing-hole positions against the drawing; trial-fit sockets, chain eyes and supplied fittings. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

Outdoor evidence: match the quarry, stone identity and finish in the test reports to the delivered bollards; check the agreed water-absorption and frost-resistance results.

Packing and arrival: check each bollard is restrained with protected edges and no contact with neighbouring stone. Solid wood crates and pallets used for imports into Great Britain must meet the international wood-packaging standard. Check treatment markings, bracing and crate damage before unloading.

What goes wrong

A row of bollards can look mismatched when the factory mixes stone blocks or finishes. Filled cracks can be hard to see on polished faces, and poorly protected tops chip in transit. Wrong fixing-hole positions or an incorrect buried length can force site alterations. Photograph damage and compare suspect pieces with the approved sample before installation.

A heavy stone post does not by itself establish vehicle-impact performance. If the project needs a protective barrier, agree the complete installation and supporting test evidence with the project designer before ordering. Keep decorative landscaping specifications separate from claims about stopping vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on natural-stone bollards from China?

The relevant supplied lines under heading 6802 all carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Do natural-stone bollards need CE or UKCA marking?

Check the exact product and intended use with a compliance adviser. Establish the applicable standard or technical assessment and marking route; a certificate for stone paving does not establish the route for a bollard.

Can a granite bollard stop a vehicle?

Do not infer impact performance from stone type or weight. Ask for test evidence matching the complete bollard, foundation and anchoring arrangement proposed for your site.

What should I specify for outdoor stone bollards?

Specify stone identity, colour range, finish, profile, fixing details and acceptable repairs. Agree water-absorption and frost-resistance evidence, then check dimensions, cracks and packing before shipment.
