UK duty on natural stone shower trays

Heading 6802 covers worked monumental or building stone and articles thereof, excluding slate articles, alongside natural stone mosaics and coloured granules. This guide concerns natural stone shower trays. The rows show possible classifications by stone type and working; confirm the actual product rather than treating every tray as the same commodity.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Market requirements and wood-packaging rules still need separate checks.

Send the broker the stone identity, manufacturing description, photographs and net weight to confirm the commodity code. For wider worked-stone coverage, see natural stone stair treads.

Stone, drainage and installation specification

Specify the quarry and stone type, acceptable colour and veining, filled fissures, surface texture and sealer. Put the tray outline, thickness, drain position, outlet detail, falls, rim and underside support on an approved drawing. Agree compatibility with the chosen waste fitting and shower enclosure. Request wet-slip and cleaning tests on the finished, sealed surface.

For Great Britain, construction products covered by a designated standard need a compliant declaration of performance and conformity marking. CE marking remains accepted; UKCA is also available subject to its requirements. Ask the supplier to identify the applicable shower-tray standard and match the declaration and supporting reports to the actual model. Use testing and certification support to check the proposed route.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of crated marble shower trays for a bathroom retailer under 6802 91 00 90, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry and drainage: measure against the drawing, check underside bearing surfaces and fit the specified waste. Run water through a supported sample and check for pooling, leakage and an obstructed outlet.

Stone and finish: compare colour and veining with the approved range. Inspect the drain opening, underside and edges for cracks, chips and concealed repairs. Check the agreed texture and sealer on production pieces.

Documents: where construction-product rules apply, match the declaration of performance and conformity marking to the supplied model. Compare the wet-slip and cleaning reports with the actual finish rather than an unsealed stone sample.

Packing and arrival: check rigid support, edge protection and separation between trays. Solid wood packaging imported into Great Britain must meet ISPM 15; check the legible mark. On arrival, photograph damage before unpacking and record cracks during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A tray can match the outline yet fail to drain because its falls or waste recess are wrong. A waste fitting may tighten against an uneven seat and leak. Approve a supported sample with the intended fitting, then repeat drainage and fit checks on production trays.

A glossy or newly sealed surface can behave differently when wet. Filled fissures may open around the drain, while poor underside support or loose crating can cause fractures. Keep the approved finish, support instructions and packing design with the order, and inspect before installation.
