Sourcing natural saponite clay from China

Natural saponite clay from China carries 0% UK duty if classified as other clays. Confirm mineral identity and processing before choosing the code, and consider UK REACH registration when importing a substance for the first time. Waste controls apply if the material is waste. Cambridge China Bridge sources natural saponite clay.

Natural saponite clay duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 2508 covers other clays and specified refractory minerals and earths. Its supplied lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions. Natural saponite is a candidate for the other-clays line, 2508 40 00 00, subject to confirmation. The table shows supply forms under that same candidate code, rather than separate tariff lines.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only when the material is waste. For a shipment from China to England under notification controls, the notifier must obtain consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities before shipping. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement, particularly for reclaimed or spent clay.

Give your broker the mineral analysis, processing history, additives and intended use to confirm the commodity code. For the wider heading, see our attapulgite clay guide.

Specify mineral identity and dispersion

Specify natural saponite rather than accepting a generic clay description. Ask for the mine or deposit, a mineralogical report identifying saponite and accompanying minerals, and a declaration of any blending or chemical treatment. Approve a representative sample and retain it for comparison with deliveries.

Agree particle-size distribution, moisture, grit, colour and the properties your process needs. For slurry use, compare dispersion and viscosity using the same water, mixing method and temperature. Record whether the supplied material is crushed, screened or ground, and ask for batch-specific results.

For a substance you have not previously imported, consider whether UK REACH registration is required. Obtain composition and processing information before making that assessment. Fine clay dust can contain respirable crystalline silica, so ask for quartz and cristobalite information and plan dust control during opening, transfer and mixing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of ground natural saponite clay in bulk bags under 2508 40 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,000, so it is £1,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the batch mineralogical report, deposit and declared treatment to the approved specification.

Grading: check particle-size distribution, moisture and coarse residue against the agreed methods and acceptance limits.

Performance: compare dispersion, settling and viscosity with the retained sample under the agreed mixing conditions.

Packing: inspect bags, lifting loops, liners and pallet wrapping for damage or moisture; reconcile batch marks and delivered weights with the packing list.

What goes wrong

A supplier may describe a mixed clay as saponite, or send material from a different deposit. The replacement can look similar while dispersing differently or leaving more grit. A generic chemical analysis alone does not establish the mineral identity you ordered; compare mineralogical evidence and process trials before accepting the lot.

Moisture ingress can cause caking, damaged bags can release powder, and changes in grinding can alter mixing behaviour. Separate affected bags and retain samples before blending the delivery into existing stock. Agree how the supplier will investigate discrepancies and replace material that fails the purchase specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on natural saponite clay from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for other clays under 2508 40 00 00, with no listed trade remedies or suspensions. Confirm that your natural saponite belongs in that line.

How do I check that the clay is natural saponite?

Request a mineralogical report, deposit details and processing declaration. Compare a representative sample and batch results with the specification, including any blending or chemical treatment.

Does the tariff waste control apply to newly mined saponite?

Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff attaches a waste control, so ask your broker to confirm its treatment using the supplier’s origin and processing records.

Do I need UK REACH registration for natural saponite?

HSE says to consider registration when importing a substance you have not previously imported. Establish the composition and processing history before assessing whether registration is required.
