Sourcing Ball Clay from China

Ball clay entered as other clays from China carries 0% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. Confirm the composition and commodity code, check whether waste controls apply, and assess UK REACH registration before importing. Approve performance in your ceramic body. Cambridge China Bridge sources ball clay.

Ball clay duty and import checks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 2508 covers other clays and specified refractory minerals. The other-clays line, 2508 40 00 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension listed. The table shows purchasing forms against the same tariff line. See the wider clay guide.

The supplied tariff record attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For material offered from China as recovered clay or production residue, ask your customs broker to confirm its waste status and the applicable import procedure before shipment. Do not assume the tariff entry alone settles the requirement.

Confirm the commodity code using the composition, processing and any additives. HSE advises businesses importing a substance for the first time to consider whether UK REACH registration is required. Establish the position for the actual material before ordering. Fine clay dust can contain respirable crystalline silica; confirm applicable workplace exposure requirements with HSE and plan dust control when opening bags or handling powder.

Specify performance in your ceramic body

State whether the clay is for casting, pressing or plastic forming. Agree the supply form, moisture basis, particle-size distribution, mineral composition and chemical analysis, including iron and titanium. Specify fired colour, drying and firing shrinkage, plasticity and strength against an approved sample and your own firing schedule.

For casting grades, compare slurry viscosity and response to your deflocculant using the same preparation method. Trial the clay in your existing body recipe. A supplier's white-fired test piece does not establish performance in your kiln or with your other raw materials.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 tonnes of ball clay in bulk bags under 2508 40 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,000, so it is £1,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match bag markings, batch references and analysis reports to the approved grade; retain a sealed batch sample.

Moisture and grading: check representative material from separate bags for moisture, coarse particles, hard lumps and foreign matter.

Body performance: compare fired colour, shrinkage, cracking and forming behaviour against the approved sample using the agreed method.

Packing and arrival: inspect bag seams, lifting loops, pallet protection and signs of wetting; record damaged bags and keep suspect material separate.

What goes wrong

A changed mine seam or blend can alter fired colour, plasticity and casting behaviour even when the sales description stays the same. Moisture variation changes how much dry clay enters the recipe. Coarse grit and contamination can leave specks or surface defects after firing.

Wet or damaged bags can cause caking and contamination. Inspect incoming material before mixing it into accepted stock, then compare a retained sample with the approval sample. Ask the supplier to explain batch differences and agree the disposition of affected material before using it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ball clay from China?

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, other clays under 2508 40 00 00 carry 0% duty from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing measure or suspension is listed.

How do I check ball clay before ordering?

Trial a representative sample in your ceramic body. Compare moisture, grading, plasticity, fired colour and shrinkage using your production method and firing schedule.

Do waste controls apply to imported ball clay?

Waste shipment controls apply where the material is waste. The tariff attaches a waste control; ask your customs broker to confirm the procedure for recovered clay or production residue from China.

Why does a new ball clay batch change fired colour?

The mine seam, blend or contamination may have changed. Compare batch analysis and retained samples, especially iron and titanium, and repeat the firing trial in your own body.
