Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, heading 9208 covers musical boxes, fairground organs, mechanical street organs, mechanical singing birds, musical saws and other musical instruments not falling within another heading of chapter 92, and decoy calls, whistles and call horns. Both lines, musical boxes and other, carried 0% on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure.
Electronic musical greeting modules and sound chips are classified as electrical apparatus, and jewellery boxes with a music movement may be classified by the box, so confirm the commodity code from the main character of the product.

Safety and tune rights
Music boxes designed or intended for children to play with are toys under the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, so they need UKCA or CE marking, a UK responsible person and small-parts and sharp-edge checks. Decorative boxes for adults must still be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
The tune pinned on the cylinder is a musical work. Traditional and public-domain tunes are free to use, but a recent song needs permission from the rights holder, so confirm the tune list before production.
Specifying music boxes
Specify movement type (18-note, 30-note or larger, clockwork or hand-crank), tune and its source, case material and finish, lid, figurine or dancer, engraving or printing, and gift packaging.
Worked duty example
Suppose, purely for illustration, you import 3,000 wooden hand-crank music boxes under 9208 10 00 00. At £9,000 free on board and £700 to ship and insure, the customs value is £9,700. With 0% duty on music boxes, the only charge is import VAT: 20% of £9,700, or £1,940. VAT-registered businesses usually recover that in their next return. Inspection checklist
Movement: play every sampled box through the tune, listen for missed or buzzing notes, check the spring runs for the stated time, and check the stop lever works.
Case: check the lid hinge, finish, glue lines and figurine attachment, and for children's boxes check for small parts and sharp points.
Marking and packing: check the tune matches the order, labels are correct, and gift boxes are undamaged.
What goes wrong
Music box orders fail on the movement, the tune and the case. Cheaper movements with fewer notes are substituted, notes buzz or drop out, the wrong tune is pinned, and lids or figurines come loose in transit.
