Sourcing switchgear barriers from China

Moulded insulating switchgear barriers from China carry 0% UK duty under heading 8547, with no trade remedies listed. Specify the resin grade and insulation performance; business-to-business components are outside RoHS scope, but the finished assembly must comply where applicable. Cambridge China Bridge sources moulded insulating switchgear barriers.

Zero duty on insulating switchgear barriers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8547 covers electrical insulating fittings wholly of insulating material, apart from minor metal components incorporated during moulding solely for assembly. Moulded plastic barriers fall within the plastics line where they meet that description. The table separates common barrier applications sharing the same code.

All lines in the supplied tariff extract carry 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or import controls are listed. The named mica battery component line is not a general switchgear-barrier code. The worked order is illustrative, rather than a supplier quotation.

Confirm the material, function and any metal inserts against the drawing before choosing the commodity code. For the wider product family, see insulating fittings.

Specify the resin and installed barrier geometry

State the resin manufacturer and grade, reinforcement, colour, permitted use of recycled material, operating temperature, dielectric strength, flammability and tracking performance. Agree which material reports apply to the exact grade and colour. Describe any assembly inserts and prohibit unapproved material substitutions.

Supply a controlled drawing showing wall thickness, ribs, mounting holes, clips and the barrier profile around terminals or busbars. Identify dimensions that maintain the designed insulation spacing. Approve samples fitted into the intended switchgear, checking cover closure, fastener access and retention.

Government guidance distinguishes business-to-business component parts from finished equipment: the components are outside RoHS scope, while an in-scope finished assembly must comply. Ask for material substance declarations to support the assembly manufacturer's assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10,000 moulded plastic phase barriers under 8547 20 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match batch records and material certificates to the ordered resin grade, colour and approved performance reports.

Geometry: measure mounting features and critical wall sections across mould cavities; check warping, short shots, flash and cracks.

Assembly: fit bulk samples into the intended switchgear; check clips, inserts, barrier alignment and clearance from terminals and busbars.

Arrival: check for broken ribs, bent clips and packing damage; retain batch identity and compare electrical test results with the agreed specification.

What goes wrong

A barrier can fit its mounting holes yet leave the wrong gap around a busbar. Warping, thin sections or flash can obstruct assembly or change the intended insulation spacing. Resin substitution can also invalidate the performance evidence supplied with the approved sample.

Lock the material and drawing revision into the order, approve an installed sample and inspect bulk parts against it. Keep batches identifiable when receiving the shipment. The quality inspection guide explains how to agree the checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on moulded switchgear barriers from China?

The supplied tariff extract shows 0% under heading 8547, including plastic insulating fittings under 8547 20 00 00. No trade remedies, suspensions or import controls are listed.

Which commodity code covers plastic phase barriers?

8547 20 00 00 covers insulating fittings of plastics. Check that the barrier meets the heading description, including the restriction on incorporated metal components.

Do separately supplied barriers need RoHS compliance?

Government guidance places business-to-business component parts outside RoHS scope. An in-scope finished assembly must comply, so obtain material substance evidence for its manufacturer.

What should I test before approving a barrier?

Check the exact resin grade and performance evidence, measure critical sections and mounting features, and fit samples into the intended switchgear. Agree dielectric testing for the application.
