Sidecar duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8711 covers motorcycles, motor-assisted cycles and sidecars. For complete sidecars supplied separately, check the “Other” line, 8711 90 00 00, carrying 6% duty on goods from China. That line lists no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. The table shows configurations sharing this candidate code.

The tariff attaches an import waste control. Waste shipment controls apply only to goods classed as waste. For waste sidecars from China entering England under notification controls, the exporter applies through the Chinese competent authority; shipment awaits consent from the Environment Agency and other authorities involved. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement. The snapshot also lists waste export controls and a cultural-object export licence measure; check these separately before onward export.

Confirm whether the shipment contains complete separate sidecars, a motorcycle combination or components through finding your commodity code. Do not assume loose bodies or mounting brackets use the complete-sidecar code. For the wider heading and complete petrol motorcycles, see petrol motorcycle sourcing.

Specify the mounting side and motorcycle fit

For Great Britain road use, right-side sidecars are prohibited on motorcycles registered on or after 1st August 1981, except motorcycles temporarily brought into Great Britain by a person resident abroad. Specify left-side mounting for the intended contemporary motorcycle range. Record the motorcycle models, frame attachment locations, bracket drawings, adjustment method, passenger or cargo load, suspension, wheel, tyre and any brake arrangement. For brake controls, see our motorcycle brake lever sourcing guide.

Agree whether fitting uses bolts or welding. Welding a sidecar onto a motorcycle must be notified to the vehicle registration authority and requires motorcycle single vehicle approval before public-road use. Do not treat a universal mounting claim as evidence of fit. Ask for structural test evidence, installation instructions and a trial assembly on the intended motorcycle.

Consumer-product importers must ensure products are safe and follow applicable labelling requirements. Review the proposed evidence through testing and certification support. Specify body material, corrosion protection, seat attachment, access, weather protection, lighting connections and replacement-part identification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 6 complete motorcycle sidecars; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8711 90 00 00, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,500. Duty at 6% is £330. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,830, so it is £1,166. Import taxes total £1,496; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £330 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mountings: compare brackets, attachment locations and fasteners with the approved drawings; trial-fit the assembly and check adjustment travel, alignment and clearance.

Structure: inspect frame and bracket welds for visible cracks, distortion and incomplete joints; check body fixings, seat anchorage and corrosion protection against the sample.

Running gear: check wheel bearings, tyre condition, suspension movement and any brake operation; compare alignment and fastener tightening with the installation instructions.

Body and delivery: inspect panels, access openings, weather seals, wiring and supplied fittings for damage or omissions. Record findings through quality inspection before shipment and repeat condition checks on arrival.

What goes wrong

A factory may supply the opposite mounting side, omit motorcycle-specific brackets or change attachment geometry after sample approval. A sidecar that looks correct in photographs can still interfere with the exhaust, rider access or suspension. Approve a trial installation and freeze the mounting drawings before production.

Transport can expose loose fixings, cracked body panels, damaged wiring or bent brackets. Keep suspect units out of customer deliveries while investigating. A proposal to weld brackets onto the motorcycle also changes the fitting plan: review the notification and approval requirements before accepting that solution.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
