Sourcing petrol speedway motorcycles from China

Petrol speedway motorcycles from China carry 6% to 8% UK duty, depending on engine capacity, with no trade remedies listed for the petrol lines. Ask the relevant authority to confirm the applicable safety requirements and compliance evidence before sale. Confirm the actual fuel specification and intended track use. Petrol speedway motorcycle duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8711 covers motorcycles, mopeds and cycles fitted with an auxiliary motor, with or without side-cars, and side-cars. Petrol speedway motorcycles are classified by engine capacity rather than the supplier's racing description. The table gives candidate capacity bands; it does not establish that a model suits your intended event.

The petrol motorcycle lines carry 8% duty up to 250 cc and 6% above 250 cc, with no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension recorded. The tariff attaches an import waste control. For goods classed as waste shipped from China into England under notification controls, the exporter applies for consent in China and shipment awaits consent from the authorities involved. Confirm the requirements with your customs broker. Waste export and cultural-object export measures concern onward exports.

Use the engine specification and complete vehicle description when finding your commodity code. Keep the declared capacity consistent across the order, engine records and customs paperwork. For the wider heading, see the petrol trials motorcycle guide.

Specify the petrol engine and intended track use

State explicitly that the engine must run on the agreed petrol specification. Ask for engine identity, cylinder capacity, fuel-system settings, lubrication method, cooling arrangement and maintenance instructions. A listing described only as a speedway motorcycle is insufficient. Match the sample's fuel system and engine components to the proposed production build.

Specify frame geometry, fork arrangement, wheels, tyres, gearing, clutch, chain protection and engine stop control. Record the braking arrangement rather than assuming road-motorcycle equipment. Compare the proposed build with the requirements supplied by your intended event organiser. Agree spare-part identification and prohibit component substitutions without written agreement.

Ask the relevant authority to confirm the applicable safety requirements and compliance evidence before placing products on the market. Once products have been placed on the market, importers remain responsible for their safety. Review model-specific evidence through testing and certification. Establish whether the intended use is exclusively competition, recreational track riding or road use, and check the applicable requirements before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 petrol speedway motorcycles; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8711 30 90 00, invoiced at £100,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £105,000. Duty at 6% is £6,300. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £111,300, so it is £22,260. Import taxes total £28,560; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £6,300 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Engine and fuel: match engine identity and capacity to the order; check petrol compatibility records, fuel hoses, tank mounts and leaks before a controlled sample run.

Controls and drive: check throttle return, engine stop operation, clutch action, chain alignment, tension and protection against the agreed build.

Frame and wheels: inspect welds, steering movement, fork alignment, wheel bearings, spoke tension, tyre condition and critical fasteners against assembly instructions.

Arrival condition: inspect crate restraints, bent controls and damaged fuel lines; match vehicle identification and maintenance instructions to the supplied model. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A racing label can hide an unspecified fuel setup, unsuitable gearing or a build that differs from the sample. Ask for written petrol compatibility and test the agreed configuration. Investigate fuel leakage, sticking throttle controls, loose engine mounts and chain misalignment before accepting the batch.

Do not describe a track motorcycle as road-approved on the strength of a supplier's sales sheet. Treat a proposed road-use version as a separate specification and approval review. Keep photographs and component identifiers so replacement engines, clutches and sprockets can be matched without guessing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on petrol speedway motorcycles from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 8% up to 250 cc and 6% above 250 cc on the petrol motorcycle lines. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed for those lines.

Does a speedway motorcycle listing prove it runs on petrol?

No. Ask for written petrol compatibility, engine identity and fuel-system settings. Test the agreed sample configuration and match production components to it.

Can I sell an imported speedway motorcycle for road use?

Check the exact model and intended use first. For a road-use motorcycle in Great Britain, confirm the applicable vehicle approval route with the relevant authority before ordering.

What should I inspect when the motorcycles arrive?

Check engine identity, fuel leaks, throttle return, engine stop control, clutch, chain alignment, frame welds, steering, wheels and transit damage against the approved sample and assembly instructions.
