Sourcing microplate readers from China
The relevant microplate reader lines carry 0% UK duty from China, with no anti-dumping duty recorded. The main rule is to establish the manufacturer's intended use: general laboratory equipment and readers intended for human diagnostic testing need different compliance checks. Cambridge China Bridge sources microplate readers.

Microplate reader duty and classification
Heading 9027 covers physical and chemical analysis instruments. Microplate readers measure signals from samples held in plate wells. Spectrophotometric readers and other optical readers have different candidate codes; the table also includes a residual analytical line and parts. These are classification options, not interchangeable codes. See the wider UV-visible spectrophotometer guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all listed lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions recorded. The residual line 9027 89 90 00 carries an export control of mercury, rather than a named import control. If using that line, ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance to the exact goods.
Confirm the commodity code using the measurement principle, optical modes, intended use and whether the shipment contains a complete reader or separate parts. Keep the manufacturer's technical description with the classification decision. The import duty and VAT guide explains the separate import VAT calculation.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spectrophotometric microplate readers, subject to classification | 9027 30 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other optical microplate readers, subject to classification | 9027 50 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other analytical readers, where neither optical line applies | 9027 89 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Microplate reader parts and accessories, subject to classification | 9027 90 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the assay, optics and software
Specify absorbance, fluorescence or luminescence modes individually. Agree the wavelength selection method, required filters, compatible plate formats and materials, reading direction, shaking and temperature control. Give the supplier your actual assay and plate combination, with agreed acceptance criteria for repeatability, background signal and variation across the plate.
Agree software licences, offline operation, raw-data export, computer compatibility and access to replacement lamps, filters and plate carriers. For equipment within the electrical safety rules, importers must check conformity assessment, provide importer identification and ensure understandable English instructions. Electromagnetic compatibility rules also require checks of assessment, technical documentation and conformity marking.
General laboratory products are not automatically in vitro diagnostic devices; the manufacturer's specific intended use matters. For a medical-device reader, confirm the UK Responsible Person and MHRA registration before placing it on the Great Britain market. Check hazardous-substance restrictions and any applicable exemption. Importing electrical equipment commercially for resale brings producer responsibilities, including annual registration; importing for your own use is treated differently.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative laboratory microplate reader order, not a quotation under 9027 30 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Optics: run the agreed reference plate and blanks in every purchased mode; compare repeatability, background and results across well positions with the acceptance criteria.
Plate handling: load the agreed plate types, check carrier alignment and clearance, and repeat loading, shaking and temperature-control functions where fitted.
Software: install the supplied version, activate licences, run the agreed method and export raw results with correct well mapping and units.
Arrival condition: check transit damage, loose optical components, model and serial identification, supplied accessories and matching documents. Record results before releasing the equipment for use; plan quality inspection around these checks.

What goes wrong
A reader can produce plausible results while using unsuitable filters, plate materials or software settings. A demonstration with the supplier's assay does not establish performance with yours. Missing licences, incompatible exports and unavailable replacement optical components can also prevent routine use.
A research description can conflict with diagnostic claims in the manual or sales listing. Settle the intended use and obtain documents for the actual model before ordering. Use testing and certification support to organise the evidence needed for the agreed application.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on microplate readers from China?
The selected heading 9027 lines carried 0% duty on the stated read date, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm the exact code from the reader's measurement principle.
Is a microplate reader a medical device?
Not automatically. General laboratory products are outside the diagnostic-device definition unless specifically intended by the manufacturer for in vitro diagnostic examination of human samples.
How do I check a Chinese microplate reader before shipment?
Use your agreed assay, plate types and reference materials. Check every purchased mode, well mapping, repeatability, background, loading and raw-data export against written acceptance criteria.
What should I ask about reader software?
Confirm licence ownership, activation, offline operation, compatible computers, raw-data export and access to installers. Test the supplied version with your actual workflow before accepting the reader.
