Sourcing methylphenyl silicone resins from China

Methylphenyl silicone resins in primary forms from China normally carry 6% UK duty. The wider heading has named 0% suspensions, not a general resin exemption. Importers must ensure correct chemical labelling and packaging before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources methylphenyl silicone resins.

6% for ordinary methylphenyl resin grades

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3910 covers silicones in primary forms. Methylphenyl silicone resins are candidates for 3910 00 00 90, “Other”. The table shows different supply forms against the same candidate tariff line. Confirm the composition and presentation, particularly for solvent solutions and formulated coatings, using our commodity code guide.

The supplied tariff snapshot records 6% duty for Chinese goods, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure listed. Named 0% suspensions on this line concern platinum-catalysed addition-curing liquid silicone mixtures for specified uses, fluorosilicone rubber intermediates and specified methacrylate-ended siloxanes. A methylphenyl resin trade name does not establish eligibility. See the MQ silicone resin guide for wider heading context.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches import and export waste controls. For material from China moving under notification controls into England, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in the dispatch country for consent. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether waste controls apply to the particular shipment and what documentation is required, especially for recovered material or rejected batches.

Specify the resin and its cure conditions

Specify methylphenyl resin chemistry, the methyl-to-phenyl balance, reactive groups, solid or liquid form, solvent identity, solids content and viscosity with the measurement conditions. Agree the catalyst, cure schedule, substrate and intended coating or electrical insulation application. Request a technical data sheet, safety data sheet and batch certificate of analysis.

Approve a trial in your actual formulation. Compare clarity, compatibility, gel time, adhesion and the cured film after heat exposure. For electrical applications, agree the insulation tests with your laboratory. Check the UK REACH position for siloxane monomers and additives. Importers must ensure correct chemical labelling and packaging before placing the resin on the Great Britain market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of methylphenyl silicone resin in drums under 3910 00 00 90, invoiced at £17,000 free on board, with £1,400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,400. Duty at 6% is £1,104. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £19,504, so it is £3,900.80. Import taxes total £5,004.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,104 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check the manufacturer, grade and batch against the approved sample and certificate; investigate any change in solvent or resin chemistry.

Consistency: check solids content, viscosity, colour, clarity and visible contamination against the agreed specification.

Cure: prepare a film using the agreed catalyst and cure schedule; compare adhesion, hardness and behaviour after heat exposure.

Packing: check seals, leaks, lot labels, production date and remaining shelf life on arrival; retain a sealed batch sample.

What goes wrong

Matching viscosity can conceal a different solids content or solvent blend. A substituted resin may behave differently in the buyer’s formulation, while a changed catalyst or cure schedule can leave a tacky film or poor adhesion. Use the agreed formulation trial to investigate failures before releasing the batch.

Leaking drums, moisture contamination and aged material can undermine an otherwise acceptable sample. Compare arrival samples with retained factory samples and batch records. Arrange quality inspection around the agreed resin tests, rather than checking packaging alone.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on methylphenyl silicone resin from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 6% under 3910 00 00 90. Named 0% suspensions cover specific chemistries; ordinary methylphenyl resin grades should be costed at 6% unless eligibility is confirmed.

What should I put in a methylphenyl silicone resin specification?

State resin chemistry, methyl-to-phenyl balance, reactive groups, solvent, solids content, viscosity conditions, catalyst and cure schedule. Include a trial on your intended substrate.

How do I check a methylphenyl silicone resin batch?

Compare identity, solids, viscosity and appearance with the approved specification. Cure a test film and check adhesion and heat-exposure behaviour using the agreed method.

What chemical paperwork should I request from the factory?

Request the technical data sheet, safety data sheet and batch analysis. Check monomer and additive UK REACH coverage, and review chemical labelling and packaging before supplying the Great Britain market.
