Sourcing methylhydrogen silicone fluids from China
Methylhydrogen silicone fluids from China normally carry 6% UK duty. The dedicated fluid line has no suspension; named suspensions elsewhere in the heading are not a general exemption. For Great Britain, classify and label the chemical under its supply rules. Cambridge China Bridge sources methylhydrogen silicone fluids.

6% for the dedicated methylhydrogen fluid
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3910 covers silicones in primary forms. Code 3910 00 00 10 names liquid poly(methylhydrosiloxane) with terminal trimethylsilyl groups, chemical identity 63148-57-2 and purity by weight of 99,9 % or more. Chinese goods carry 6%, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension on this line.
Other methylhydrogen grades need composition checks before using 3910 00 00 90. Its ordinary rate is 6%; named 0% suspensions cover specified platinum-catalysed addition-cure liquid mixtures, fluorosilicone intermediates and methacrylate-ended polymers. A methylhydrogen fluid name alone does not establish eligibility. The table distinguishes buyer variants sharing a code. See the wider silicone guide, and confirm the commodity code from the full composition.
The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. For a shipment from China treated as waste under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent and follow its procedures. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste requirements before shipment, including any subsequent export.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trimethylsilyl-ended methylhydrogen fluid meeting the named purity | 3910 00 00 10 | 6% | None |
| Other methylhydrogen silicone fluids, subject to composition checks | 3910 00 00 90 | 6% | None |
Specify hydrogen content and polymer structure
Specify whether you need methylhydrogen homopolymer or a methylhydrogen-dimethyl copolymer, the end groups, hydrogen content and its reporting basis, viscosity with test temperature and method, volatile content, and any diluent or additive. Agree a batch certificate of analysis and retain an approved sample. Trial the fluid in your own formulation rather than accepting viscosity as proof of equivalent performance.
For Great Britain, substances and mixtures placed on the market must be classified and labelled under the applicable chemical classification and labelling regulation. A safety data sheet is required for hazardous chemicals supplied for workplace use. Obtain a sheet matching the actual grade and check its storage and handling instructions. Check the UK REACH position for siloxane monomers and additives; the wider silicone guide explains this background.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of qualifying methylhydrogen silicone fluid in drums under 3910 00 00 10, invoiced at £17,000 free on board, with £1,400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,400. Duty at 6% is £1,104. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £19,504, so it is £3,900.80. Import taxes total £5,004.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,104 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the drum label, purchase specification and batch certificate to the agreed polymer and end groups.
Analysis: check hydrogen content, viscosity and volatile content against the agreed limits; compare a retained sample with the approved material.
Performance: run the agreed formulation trial and record cure behaviour and the resulting properties before releasing the batch.
Packing: check seals, leaks, contamination, batch numbers and production dates on arrival. Use quality inspection to define what is checked before dispatch.

What goes wrong
A replacement fluid can match viscosity yet differ in hydrogen content or polymer structure, changing formulation performance. Certificates may omit the hydrogen reporting basis or use a different viscosity test temperature. Damaged seals, contamination and inconsistent volatile content can also make a batch unsuitable. Agree the test methods and release criteria before ordering.
Another failure is costing an ordinary methylhydrogen fluid at a suspended rate simply because a neighbouring silicone grade qualifies. Keep chemical identity, purity, composition and tariff eligibility together in the purchasing file. Separate commercial grade acceptance from the classification and labelling needed for supply.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on methylhydrogen silicone fluid from China?
The dedicated line 3910 00 00 10 carries 6%, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Other grades need classification checks; suspensions under the residual line cover named products only.
Is methylhydrogen silicone fluid the same as ordinary silicone oil?
Do not substitute by viscosity alone. Specify the methylhydrogen structure, end groups and hydrogen content, then compare performance in your actual formulation.
Do I need a safety data sheet for methylhydrogen silicone fluid?
A safety data sheet is required when a hazardous chemical is supplied for workplace use. Obtain the sheet for the actual grade and check its hazard classification, storage and handling information.
How should I check a Chinese methylhydrogen silicone fluid batch?
Match identity and batch records, verify hydrogen content, viscosity and volatiles against agreed methods, inspect drum seals, and run your formulation trial before releasing the material.
