Sourcing metallocene polypropylene from China

Metallocene polypropylene resin from China normally carries 6% UK duty; qualifying listed grades can receive 0%. The catalyst name alone does not establish eligibility: check composition and the full suspension description. Food-contact grades need a declaration of compliance. Cambridge China Bridge sources metallocene polypropylene resin.

Normally 6%, with conditional suspensions

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3902 covers propylene and other olefin polymers in primary forms. Metallocene describes the production technology, rather than a separate tariff line in the supplied data. The table separates end-use grades sharing a code; copolymer classification needs composition checks. For the wider family, see polypropylene granules.

The relevant lines carry 6% standard duty for China, with conditional suspensions to 0%. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Specialty polypropylene under 3902 10 00 20 must match its listed properties. Suspension descriptions under the residual polypropylene and copolymer lines cover particular products, rather than all metallocene grades. Some supplied descriptions are truncated: obtain the complete conditions before claiming relief.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply when the material is waste; waste plastics outside green list controls require notification and consent before shipment to England. For goods from China, have your customs broker confirm waste status and the applicable procedure. Confirm the commodity code using composition, physical form and test results, rather than the supplier's grade name.

Specify the metallocene grade and processing use

Name the producer, exact grade and intended process: film extrusion, fibre spinning or moulding. Request evidence supporting the metallocene description, a technical datasheet and a batch certificate of analysis. Agree homopolymer or copolymer identity, comonomer content where relevant, melt flow rate, melting behaviour and mechanical properties. Compare results using the same test conditions.

Specify the additive package, including slip, antiblocking, antistatic and stabilising additives, and agree whether recycled material or reprocessed production scrap is permitted. For film, trial seal strength, haze and blocking in your actual structure. For fibre, trial spinning stability and filament breaks. A matching melt flow rate alone does not establish an interchangeable grade.

Confirm with the relevant authority which UK REACH registration obligations apply to the polymer, monomers and additives, and whether upstream arrangements cover the actual formulation. For food-contact applications, request the grade-specific declaration of compliance and its supporting migration evidence, including intended food types and use conditions. Do not accept a generic statement covering the producer's entire catalogue.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial order: one tonne of metallocene polypropylene homopolymer pellets under 3902 10 00 90, invoiced at £1,900 free on board, with £250 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,150. Duty at 6% is £129. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,279, so it is £455.80. Import taxes total £584.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £129 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match producer, grade and batch markings on the bags to the purchase specification and certificate of analysis; retain samples from each lot.

Flow and melting: independently compare melt flow rate and melting behaviour with the approved sample using agreed methods and conditions.

Pellets and packing: inspect for black specks, foreign pellets, fines, inconsistent colour, broken bags and damaged seals; check delivered weight against the packing list.

Processing: run the agreed film, fibre or moulding trial on arrival before releasing the lot to routine production. Record defects against the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A supplier substitutes conventional polypropylene, changes the additive package or supplies a blend under the same commercial description. Similar melt flow results can conceal changes in sealing, clarity or spinning behaviour. Agree that changes need your written acceptance and compare production samples with retained approved material.

Contamination produces gels, specks or filament breaks, while mixed lots make processing settings unstable. Another failure is budgeting for suspended duty without proving eligibility. Keep batch records, complete a process trial and resolve the tariff conditions before dispatch. Use the quality inspection guide to write the inspection brief.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on metallocene polypropylene resin from China?

Normally 6% on the relevant polypropylene and propylene copolymer lines. Qualifying listed products can receive 0% through a suspension. Metallocene production alone does not prove eligibility.

Does metallocene polypropylene have its own commodity code?

The supplied tariff data has no separate metallocene polypropylene line. Confirm the code from polymer composition, physical form and any applicable specialty-property description.

Can I replace my current polypropylene with a metallocene grade?

Compare composition, melt flow, melting behaviour and additives, then trial it in your process. Check film sealing and blocking, fibre spinning stability or the required moulded-part properties.

What paperwork do I need for food-contact resin?

Request a declaration of compliance naming the grade, with supporting migration evidence and intended use conditions. Check that the additive package and supplied batch match the documented formulation.
