A flat 12% on the selected dinner jacket lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6203 covers men's or boys' suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, trousers, bib and brace overalls, breeches and shorts other than swimwear. This guide focuses on separately supplied men's woven dinner jackets. The selected wool, cotton, synthetic-fibre and artificial-fibre jacket lines all carry 12% duty on goods from China. The supplied record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions for these lines.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur and seal-product import controls to these lines, and CITES import and export controls to the wool or fine animal hair line. Products containing cat or dog fur are banned from import. Seal products face an import ban with limited exceptions; the traditional-hunt exception requires a seal catch attestation. For CITES-listed materials, confirm species-specific permits and documents before ordering. Ask your customs broker to check any animal-derived trim proposed by the Chinese supplier.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual fibre composition, woven construction and garments supplied together. Do not assume a jacket supplied alone and a complete dinner suit share a code. For the wider heading and matching sets, see men's woven suits.

Specify the lapels, fit and jacket construction

Specify shell, lining and lapel-facing composition separately, together with fabric weight, weave, colour and finish. Agree peak or shawl lapels, facing width and sheen, covered buttons, pocket style, vents and front fastening. Approve the contrast between the facing and shell under consistent lighting rather than relying on fabric photographs.

Agree chest, shoulder, sleeve and back measurements with tolerances and the ordered size breakdown. Choose fused or canvassed fronts, shoulder padding and lining allowance. Check the sample over the intended evening shirt, including collar contact, sleeve movement and lapel roll. Fibre composition labels are required for sale in Great Britain. Match label artwork to the actual materials and agree care instructions after testing the intended cleaning method.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 men's synthetic-fibre woven dinner jackets under 6203 33 90 00, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £23,800. Duty at 12% is £2,856. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,656, so it is £5,331.20. Import taxes total £8,187.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,856 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure each ordered size against the approved chart; check shoulder balance, collar gap, sleeve pitch and whether the buttoned front pulls.

Lapels and fabric: compare facing sheen, colour and width with the retained sample; check symmetry, rippling, snagging and colour transfer onto a light shirt.

Construction: inspect front bubbling after the agreed cleaning trial, lining tension, pocket openings, button covering and attachment, and loose threads inside sleeves.

Labels and arrival: match fibre and size labels to the order; inspect arriving jackets for damp, crushed lapels and pressing marks. Plan shipment checks with the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A dinner jacket can match the chest measurement yet sit poorly because the shoulder shape or sleeve pitch differs from the sample. Lapel facings may arrive with uneven sheen, rippled edges or mismatched widths. Covered buttons can use a different fabric shade, making the finished jacket visibly inconsistent.

Fused fronts may bubble after cleaning, while tight linings pull at the back or sleeves. Heavy pressing can leave shine on the shell and flatten the lapel roll. Retain an approved finished jacket, test production materials using the agreed cleaning method, and agree packing that protects the shoulders and lapels.
