Stringer vest duty and fibre classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 6109 covers knitted or crocheted T-shirts, singlets and other vests. This guide focuses on men's knitted gym stringer vests with narrow shoulder straps and deep armholes. The cotton T-shirt row is included only for comparison. For the wider heading, see running vests.

All listed lines carry 12% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions recorded. The non-cotton lines carry CITES import and export controls. If protected species material is present, ask your customs broker or the relevant CITES authority to confirm whether an import permit and corresponding Chinese export documentation are needed for shipment from China into Great Britain. Confirm the species and applicable requirements before ordering.

Confirm the commodity code from the finished garment's construction and fibre composition. A supplier's description of a vest as sportswear does not settle its classification. Record the fabric blend and agree the sample before seeking clearance advice.

Specify narrow straps, back shape and coverage

Specify fibre composition, knit structure, fabric weight, stretch, recovery and opacity under stretch. Draw the shoulder strap width, back panel shape, neckline, armhole depth, chest width and body length. Define where each measurement is taken so that the factory cannot measure a deep armhole from a different starting point.

Approve a sample worn while reaching overhead and moving the arms through gym exercises. Check whether straps move towards the neck, binding rubs the underarms or the back panel pulls. Agree seam construction, binding tension, hem shape, logo position and washing checks. The fibre label must show the fibre content. Products should only be sold once compliance with product safety regulations has been demonstrated appropriately.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 men's cotton knitted gym stringer vests under 6109 10 00 90, invoiced at £7,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,700. Duty at 12% is £924. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,624, so it is £1,724.80. Import taxes total £2,648.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £924 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fabric: compare composition, knit, shade, stretch recovery and stretched opacity with the retained sample; look for substitutions between colours.

Fit: measure strap width, back panel, neckline, armhole depth and body length across the ordered sizes; check symmetry and coverage during movement.

Seams and washing: inspect binding joins, skipped stitches and rough seam ends; stretch the seams and check washed samples for twisting, shrinkage and print cracking.

Arrival: match fibre labels, size assortment and carton contents to the order; inspect for dampness, stains and crushed packing. Put these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A stringer can match the chest measurement but expose more than the approved sample because the straps are narrower or the armholes deeper. Uneven binding tension can pull the neckline sideways or curl the back panel. Compare the garment on a wearer as well as flat on a table.

A softer replacement fabric may stretch permanently, making the straps longer and the hem uneven. Prints can crack where the chest stretches, while rough binding joins can rub bare skin. Retain the approved fabric and washed sample, and record any changes before accepting bulk production.
