Sourcing mechanics hand tool sets from China

Mechanics hand tool sets under heading 8206 carry a flat 2% UK duty from China. The retail set must combine tools from different headings within 8202 to 8205; a socket-only set needs separate classification. Confirm the applicable safety requirements with HSE before supplying tools for use at work. Cambridge China Bridge sources mechanics hand tool sets.

Duty and classification for mechanics tool sets

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 8206 covers tools of two or more of headings 8202 to 8205, put up in sets for retail sale. A mechanics kit combining sockets or spanners with screwdrivers or pliers can fit this description. The table shows product variants sharing the supplied commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Commodity code 8206 00 00 00 carries 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. A socket-only or spanner-only set remains within heading 8204, rather than automatically becoming a heading 8206 set.

Confirm the complete tool list and retail presentation using the commodity code guide. For another mixed-tool family within the wider heading, see the electrician hand tool kits guide.

Specify socket fit, ratchets and the complete tool list

List every socket, spanner, screwdriver, bit, plier and accessory. Specify metric or imperial sizes, socket depth and profile, drive interfaces, extensions and the intended fasteners. Agree ratchet direction switching, retention and clearance in confined engine bays. Approve a complete sample with its case and contents list.

State steel grades, heat treatment, hardness, finish and acceptance tests. Agree socket and spanner gauges, proof torque checks and ratchet slip tests. If torque wrenches are included, request calibration to ISO 6789 with a certificate. Define case hinges, latches and tool retention rather than accepting a photograph as the specification.

Confirm with HSE the safety and safe-use information requirements for tools supplied for use at work. For Great Britain, the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 cover products intended for, or reasonably likely to be used by, consumers. Agree instructions covering intended use, loading and recognition of damaged tools.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative stock order of cased socket, spanner and screwdriver sets for a garage supplier under 8206 00 00 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 2% is £640. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,640, so it is £6,528. Import taxes total £7,168; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £640 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Contents and fit: count tools against the approved list; gauge socket and spanner openings, check drive engagement and trial screwdriver tips on matching fasteners.

Strength and function: check sample hardness and agreed proof torque results; test ratchet engagement, reversing, socket retention and slipping under load.

Finish and case: inspect corrosion, sharp burrs and peeling plating; check hinges and latches, then test packed-case handling and tool retention.

Documents and arrival: match size markings, instructions and any torque-wrench calibration certificate to the supplied tools; check cartons for missing or displaced contents. Agree sampling through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A high advertised piece count can hide repeated bits and omit the sockets needed for the buyer's vehicles. Oversize openings round fasteners; soft spanners spread, brittle sockets split and poorly engaging ratchets slip. Check the actual size list and test production samples against the approved sample.

Cases can look complete when closed but release tools during transport. Weak latches, cracked hinges and loose moulded pockets leave mixed or missing contents on arrival. Inspect the packed set after handling tests and separate damaged tools for assessment before use or sale.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
