Sourcing maximum-minimum thermometers from China
Maximum-minimum thermometers from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant tariff lines. Mercury-containing thermometers cannot be imported into Great Britain for ordinary sale, with narrow exceptions. Specify mercury-free construction and verify extrema and reset operation. Cambridge China Bridge sources maximum-minimum thermometers.

Zero duty and mercury controls
Heading 9025 covers thermometers and related measuring instruments, including combinations and parts. Maximum-minimum models retain the highest and lowest temperatures since reset. The table distinguishes liquid-filled and digital thermometers, electronic temperature-and-humidity combinations, and parts. For other products in the heading, see thermometers and hygrometers.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions recorded. The liquid-filled line carries mercury import and export controls; the combined electronic line carries a mercury export control. Mercury-containing thermometers cannot be imported into Great Britain for ordinary sale, subject to narrow exceptions. Obtain written confirmation of mercury-free construction.
Confirm the commodity code against the measuring method, additional functions and whether the shipment contains complete instruments or parts. For any mercury-containing model, have your customs broker confirm the attached control and any claimed exemption before ordering.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury-free liquid-filled maximum-minimum thermometers | 9025 11 80 90 | 0% | None |
| Digital maximum-minimum thermometers, without other instruments | 9025 19 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Electronic combined temperature and humidity instruments | 9025 80 40 89 | 0% | None |
| Parts and accessories for thermometers | 9025 90 00 90 | 0% | None |
Specify extrema memory and reset behaviour
State the intended setting, temperature range, accuracy tolerance, scale units, mounting orientation and exposure to moisture. Choose a mercury-free liquid-filled model or a digital model. Specify whether sensing is inside the housing or through a wired probe, and whether humidity measurement is included.
Define how maximum and minimum readings are retained and cleared. For digital models, agree what happens after battery replacement or loss of power. For liquid-filled models, agree the reset method and how the retained indicators are read. Approve a sample with clear instructions showing how to start a fresh monitoring period.
Confirm with the relevant authorities which electromagnetic compatibility, battery and waste electrical equipment requirements apply to the electronic thermometers. Ask for evidence covering the exact model and its supplied probe. Apparatus covered by the electromagnetic compatibility rules must have relevant instructions in English.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,500 digital maximum-minimum thermometers under 9025 19 00 90, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £25,500, so it is £5,100. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Accuracy: compare current readings with a calibrated reference across the agreed range, allowing the instrument to stabilise before recording results.
Extrema and reset: expose samples to warmer and cooler conditions, return them to the starting condition and check that the extremes remain stored. Operate the reset and repeat the sequence.
Construction: inspect liquid columns for separation, retained indicators for sticking, scales for alignment and housings for damage. On digital models, check display segments, battery covers and probe strain relief.
Instructions and packing: check that English instructions explain reading and reset operation, that the model matches its paperwork, and that packaging protects glass tubes, displays and supplied probes.

What goes wrong
A plausible current reading can conceal faulty maximum-minimum operation. Indicators may stick, reset mechanisms may leave an old extreme in place, or digital memory may clear when power is interrupted. Inspect the complete temperature cycle and reset sequence rather than checking only the reading at room temperature.
Placement can also distort results: direct sunlight, a nearby heater or a probe touching an unintended surface may measure conditions different from the buyer’s intended setting. Agree installation instructions and repeat the sample test in the intended mounting position. After arrival, inspect for separated liquid columns, broken tubes and damaged probe cables.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on maximum-minimum thermometers from China?
The relevant thermometer, electronic combination and parts lines carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures recorded.
Can I import mercury maximum-minimum thermometers?
Mercury-containing thermometers are subject to restrictions. Confirm with the Environment Agency whether import for ordinary sale in Great Britain is permitted and whether any claimed exception applies. Specify mercury-free construction and confirm any claimed exemption before ordering.
How do I check maximum-minimum memory?
Move the sample through warmer and cooler conditions, then back to the starting condition. Check that the extremes remain stored, reset them and repeat. Check power-loss behaviour on digital models.
Does a humidity function change the commodity code?
It can. An electronic temperature-and-humidity combination has a different candidate line from a standalone digital thermometer. Confirm classification from the complete product specification.
