Sourcing material jetting printers from China

Material jetting printers depositing plastics or rubber carry 0% UK duty from China; the selected alternative machine and parts lines also carry 0%. Machinery must be safe before supply in Great Britain. Confirm the deposited material, conformity documents and sample print performance. Cambridge China Bridge sources material jetting printers.

Duty depends on the deposited material

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8485 covers machines for additive manufacturing. Material jetting machines depositing plastics or rubber fall within 8485 20 00 00. The process name alone does not settle classification. For wider heading context, see the stereolithography printer guide.

All selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure or suspension recorded. The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to 8485 80 90 00. For waste imports into England under notification controls, the exporter must obtain consent from the dispatch country's competent authority. For goods from China, confirm the applicable waste requirements with the customs broker before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the deposited material, machine function and separately shipped parts. The keyboard line applies only where its detailed tariff description is met and flags a supplementary unit import measure; ask the broker to confirm the declaration requirement. The alternative machine row is conditional, rather than a general code for material jetting printers.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify droplets, materials and support removal

Specify the build area, jetting materials, printhead type, curing method, support material and removal process. Distinguish resin jetting from binder jetting into a powder bed. Agree a demonstration using your part file and intended materials, including fine features, thin walls, colour transitions where relevant, and the finish after support removal.

Record the approved printheads, material cartridges, cleaning method, software licence and firmware. Agree access to replacement heads and consumables, installation and operator training. Machinery must be safe before supply or use in Great Britain. Check the CE or UKCA marking, model-specific declaration of conformity and English manual; arrange document and testing checks for the supplied configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A material jetting printer for a prototype workshop, illustrative only under 8485 20 00 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £63,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £63,000, so it is £12,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Print quality: run the agreed part file on the machine being shipped. Check dimensional accuracy, surface banding, missing jets, material boundaries and distortion after support removal through quality inspection.

Materials and maintenance: verify cartridge compatibility, material identification, storage instructions and cleaning supplies. Use product labels and safety data sheets to identify harmful substances before planning resin handling and support removal.

Safety and documents: match the nameplate and declaration to the delivered configuration. Have competent personnel demonstrate enclosure interlocks, emergency stops where fitted and protection around the curing source. Check the English operating and maintenance instructions.

Arrival and packing: inspect the printhead carriage, build platform, transit restraints and fluid connections for movement or leakage. Check accessories against the packing list, then repeat the approved print after installation.

What goes wrong

Clogged or damaged jets leave stripes and incomplete features. Material substitution can change colour, stiffness or curing behaviour. Support removal can damage fine details, while a satisfactory freshly printed sample may distort after cleaning. Agree acceptance against the finished, cleaned part, using the same material and process as the demonstration.

Consumable locks, unavailable replacement heads and unclear software licences can interrupt production even when the machine prints well. Require a demonstrated cleaning routine and written support arrangements. A generic conformity document can also fail to identify the actual machine configuration; resolve mismatches before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on material jetting printers from China?

Printers depositing plastics or rubber under 8485 20 00 00 carry 0% duty. The selected alternative machine and parts lines also carry 0%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded.

Are material jetting and binder jetting printers the same?

Material jetting deposits the build material through jets. Binder jetting applies binder to a powder bed. Ask the factory to demonstrate the process and identify the material being deposited before confirming the code.

What paperwork should I request for a material jetting printer?

Request the model-specific declaration of conformity, English operating and maintenance manual, electrical schematic and supporting test documents. Check that the CE or UKCA marking and configuration match.

How should I test a material jetting printer before shipment?

Use your own part file and intended materials. Check missing jets, dimensions, surface finish and material boundaries, then remove supports and inspect again. Repeat the approved print after installation.
