Maitake spawn duty and import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0602 covers other live plants, cuttings and slips, and mushroom spawn. Its mushroom-spawn line, 0602 90 10 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows different supply formats using this same commodity line.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches veterinary control and import control of organic products to this line. Have your customs broker confirm the requirements for the Chinese consignment using the complete carrier recipe, including any animal-derived ingredients. For organic-labelled spawn, confirm the inspection-certificate requirement with your broker and organic control body. A business trading organic products must be certified by an approved UK organic control body.

Specify the maitake strain and carrier

Specify maitake as Grifola frondosa, the supplier's strain identifier, whether the order is grain or sawdust spawn, the complete carrier recipe and the intended cultivation substrate. Agree pack weight, container type, closure and filter details, batch identification, production records and storage instructions.

Ask for a sample from the proposed production strain and trial it in your own cultivation process. Agree how viability, unwanted growth and strain identity will be assessed, and what evidence supports any fruiting-performance claim. Record the agreed transport conditions and the action to take if the shipment departs from them.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 bags of maitake mushroom spawn; FOB value and freight are illustrative. under 0602 90 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,900, so it is £1,380. Inspection checklist

Identity: check the maitake strain and batch identifiers against the order and supplier records.

Condition: check for unexpected coloured growth, wet patches, insects or unusual odours in designated sample packs.

Packaging: check seals, caps and filters for damage, leakage or blocked ventilation; compare fill weight with the specification.

What goes wrong

A pack can look colonised while performing poorly in the buyer's process. Investigate strain substitution, ageing stock, contamination, carrier changes and unsuitable transport conditions. Keep affected batches separate while comparing supplier samples, arrival samples and transport records.

A generic description such as mushroom material leaves the carrier and intended use unclear. Obtain the full recipe before dispatch and resolve the tariff's attached controls with your broker. Do not treat the duty rate as confirmation that the consignment will clear.
