Waxworm classification and import controls
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0106 covers other live animals. Live feeder waxworms fit the other-insects line, 0106 49 00 00, with 0% duty for China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows purchasing formats sharing this commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.
The tariff attaches Animal Health Certificate, Veterinary control, CITES import and export, invasive alien species and organic-product controls. APHA's commercial-invertebrate guidance says veterinary health certification is unnecessary for animals within its scope. Chinese consignments normally enter through a border control post. Ask your customs broker to confirm the tariff's live-animal entry document requirement and how the certificate, CITES and organic controls apply to your exact consignment.
Confirm the scientific species name, live larval condition and intended pet-feed use before following commodity-code guidance. Have APHA check any unresolved species restrictions before dispatch. For the wider heading context, see live feeder mealworms.

Specify live larvae, substrate and transport packing
Specify the scientific species name rather than accepting 'waxworms' alone. Agree larval size, count per tub, acceptable pupation and mortality, substrate ingredients and the arrival assessment method. Ask whether the larvae have received any treatment intended to delay development. Record the breeder's identity and keep a retained packing sample.
Agree ventilation, escape-resistant closures, protection against crushing and the breeder's recommended transport and storage conditions. APHA requires transport appropriate to the species. Use the import notification system to notify APHA at least one working day before arrival. If the species is non-native, government guidance requires an import licence application; confirm its status with APHA.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale batch of live feeder waxworm tubs under 0106 49 00 00, invoiced at £2,007 free on board, with £889 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,896. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,896, so it is £579.20. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Identity: compare larvae and supplier species records with the agreed specification; record unexpected insects, pupae or moths.
Condition: photograph activity, dead or darkened larvae, mould, condensation and damaged substrate on arrival, using the agreed assessment conditions.
Packing: check ventilation, closures, escaped larvae, crushed tubs and the actual live count against the agreed packing specification.
Documents: check the required commercial invoice and packing list identify species, animal numbers, origin and destination premises, importer contacts and intended use; obtain the exporter's declaration that the animals are fit to travel.

What goes wrong
An acceptable dispatch photograph can hide deterioration during transit. Excess moisture, crushed ventilation openings, mixed developmental stages and counts that include substrate can undermine the order. Agree how arrival evidence will support a supplier claim, and arrange a receiving area where tubs can be checked without losing larvae.
Do not treat origin permission as species clearance. Commercial imports of species listed as invasive alien species of special concern are prohibited. Before selling the waxworms as feed, ask your local authority to assess the feed-business registration or approval needed for your importing and distribution activities.
