Sourcing linseed stand oil from China
Unblended linseed stand oil normally falls under 1518 00 91 80 at 6% UK duty; related technical oil mixtures carry 2% to 6%. Before a first import into Great Britain, consider whether UK REACH registration is required for the substance. Cambridge China Bridge sources linseed stand oil.

Stand oil duty and related mixture lines
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 1518 covers chemically modified oils, including oils polymerised by heat in vacuum or inert gas, and inedible oil mixtures. Unblended linseed stand oil is a candidate for 1518 00 91 80, carrying 6% duty from China with no recorded trade remedy or suspension. The other table rows are comparison lines for different compositions, not alternative codes for the same stand oil.
Technical fluid vegetable oil mixtures carry 2% if crude and 4% otherwise, with end-use authorisation required as explained in the published background guide. Other inedible mixtures carry 6%. Certain biodiesel blend lines carry a residual anti-dumping duty of 54.64%; the used-cooking-oil suspension concerns a different product. Confirm the composition and commodity code. See the boiled linseed oil guide for the wider heading.
The tariff record attaches waste, veterinary, CITES and seal-product import controls to the stand-oil candidate line. Product-specific requirements for pure plant-derived stand oil have not been established here; ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the Chinese consignment. Keep evidence of the plant source and whether the goods are waste. If waste notification controls apply, shipment must wait until the competent authorities of destination, dispatch and transit have consented.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemically modified oils, including unblended linseed stand oil | 1518 00 91 80 | 6% | None |
| Crude fluid vegetable oil mixtures for technical use, comparison line | 1518 00 31 00 | 2% | None |
| Other fluid vegetable oil mixtures for technical use, comparison line | 1518 00 39 00 | 4% | None |
| Other inedible oil mixtures or preparations, comparison line | 1518 00 99 90 | 6% | None |
Specify the stand oil and its application
Specify heat-polymerised linseed oil, the starting oil and processing route, and whether solvents, metallic driers or other oils are present. Agree viscosity with its measurement temperature and test method, colour, acid value, moisture and insoluble matter. State whether the oil will be used in artists’ media, varnish or a coating formulation, and approve a sample in that application.
Agree drum material and lining, closure type, batch identification, storage instructions and the supplier’s stated shelf life. Before importing a substance for the first time, consider whether UK REACH registration is required. Where the supplier concludes that the chemical could cause harm, hazard information should appear on the label. Confirm with HSE whether a safety data sheet is required under UK REACH for the actual substance or mixture.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 1 tonne of linseed stand oil in drums for a coatings workshop, illustrative under 1518 00 91 80, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,500. Duty at 6% is £390. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,890, so it is £1,378. Import taxes total £1,768; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £390 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Identity: check the batch analysis and manufacturing description against the approved stand-oil specification, including declared solvents, driers and blended oils.
Viscosity and appearance: test viscosity at the agreed temperature and examine colour, clarity, sediment, skin formation and gel particles.
Application: compare the arrival sample with the retained approved sample in your varnish or coating, checking mixing, flow and drying behaviour.
Drums and documents: check seals, leaks, corrosion, lining condition and batch markings; match the analysis, safety information and invoice to the delivered goods. Use the inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A supplier may offer boiled linseed oil with added driers against a stand-oil enquiry. Undeclared dilution can change viscosity and formulation behaviour, while excessive bodying can leave gel particles. A viscosity result without its temperature and method is difficult to compare. Darker colour, skin formation and contaminated drums can also make a delivered batch unsuitable.
Approve the actual formulation and test method before ordering, retain a sealed reference sample and compare the delivered batch before releasing it for production. Ask factory verification to check the producer’s processing equipment, batch records and laboratory capability.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on linseed stand oil from China?
The supplied tariff record gives 6% for chemically modified oils under 1518 00 91 80, with no recorded trade remedy or suspension. Confirm that the actual stand-oil composition fits that line.
Is linseed stand oil the same as boiled linseed oil?
Do not accept the names as interchangeable in an order. Specify the heat-polymerisation route and all additives, then compare viscosity and application performance with an approved sample.
Does imported linseed stand oil need UK REACH registration?
Before importing a substance for the first time, consider whether registration is required. Have the substance identity and composition reviewed rather than relying on the supplier’s product name.
What should I test when linseed stand oil arrives?
Check viscosity using the agreed temperature and method, colour, acid value, moisture and insoluble matter. Examine drums for leaks and contamination, then trial the batch in your intended formulation.
