Duty on leather motorcycle trousers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 24 October 2026, leather apparel under 4203 10 00 00 carries 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. Heading 4203 covers leather or composition-leather clothing and accessories. The table shows trouser variants sharing the apparel code.

The tariff attaches CITES, cat and dog fur, and seal-product import controls. CITES-listed materials need the applicable documentation before shipment; confirm the species and requirements with your customs broker. Cat and dog fur products cannot be imported. Commercial seal products are restricted to qualifying traditional indigenous hunts and require a seal catch attestation. Avoid these materials unless their eligibility and documents are established.

Confirm the actual construction and commodity code, especially where leather is only trimming. See the wider leather clothing guide for other articles within the heading.

Specify leather, riding fit and protective evidence

Specify the animal species, full-grain or split leather, thickness, tannage, finish, stretch panels and lining. Agree waist, rise, thigh and leg measurements in a seated riding position. Set out knee and hip protector pockets, protector retention, seam construction, fastening security and the jacket connection zip. Approve the actual materials and protector arrangement on a production sample.

Trousers designed to protect against riding injuries fall within personal protective equipment rules. Before sale in Great Britain, the importer must check conformity assessment, technical documentation, the relevant marking and declaration of conformity. CE or UKCA routes are available. Require evidence matching the complete trouser model, rather than relying on a protector certificate alone.

Confirm applicable UK REACH requirements for chromium VI in skin-contact leather, azo dyes and nickel release from prolonged skin-contact metal fittings with the Health and Safety Executive or a qualified compliance adviser. Agree testing for the leather colours and fittings actually ordered.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 100 pairs of leather motorcycle trousers under 4203 10 00 00, invoiced at £4,200 free on board, with £350 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,550. Duty at 4% is £182. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,732, so it is £946.40. Import taxes total £1,128.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £182 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Leather: compare grain, thickness, colour and finish with the approved sample; check for substituted split leather, cracking, dye transfer and mould.

Riding fit: check seated comfort, knee-pocket position, protector retention, stretch-panel movement and the agreed size chart.

Construction: inspect crotch and seat seams, skipped stitches, seam allowances, zip operation and the jacket connection under movement.

Documents and labels: match the model to conformity evidence, marking and declaration; check importer identification and clear English safety instructions. Use the inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong

A standing sample can look correct while the waistband pulls down and the knee protectors move when the rider sits. Thin replacement leather, altered stretch panels or changed seam construction can also make production differ from the assessed model.

Do not accept a generic certificate headed only with the factory name. Match the tested garment, materials and protector arrangement to your order, and resolve changes before shipment. Quarantine arrivals with mould, opening seams or mismatched documents while the supplier and compliance adviser investigate.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.
